Role Description: The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for delivering high-quality, compliant mechanical designs on time and to budget. The role combines technical design, engineering leadership, project delivery and customer engagement, with responsibility for ensuring designs meet customer requirements, legislative standards, quality expectations and Health & Safety requirements.
As a senior member of the engineering team, the postholder acts as a technical signatory, provides technical guidance to colleagues, mentors junior engineers and contributes to continuous improvement of engineering processes and product development.
Mechanical Design & Engineering
- Produce bespoke mechanical designs from concept through to detailed manufacture.
- Design products and assemblies that satisfy customer specifications, functionality, cost and manufacturability requirements.
- Apply mechanical, structural, thermo-fluid, dynamic and acoustic engineering principles where appropriate.
- Produce engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications and design documentation.
- Verify and validate designs to ensure compliance with relevant engineering standards and legislation.
- Carry out site surveys when required to support design activities.
- Participate in research and development projects and continuous product improvement.
Technical Assurance
- Act as a Technical Signatory, checking and approving engineering calculations, design submissions and technical documentation.
- Review customer and subcontractor technical submissions for quality and compliance.
- Interpret engineering standards, specifications and applicable legislation.
- Identify hazards and incorporate risk reduction into designs.
Project Delivery
- Deliver engineering work to agreed programmes, budgets and quality standards.
- Manage design activities across assigned projects.
- Attend project meetings and provide regular progress updates.
- Maintain accurate engineering records and documentation.
- Promote value engineering and cost reduction opportunities.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Lead mechanical engineering activities on larger projects.
- Mentor and support junior engineers / staff.
- Provide technical guidance across the business.
- Liaise with customers, suppliers, subcontractors and internal departments.

Requirements:
Essential
- Mechanical Engineering Degree
- Experience in a responsible mechanical engineering position
- Understanding of mechanical engineering principles
- Good understanding of fabrication design details
- Commitment to continued professional development in conjunction with the Company Vision Statement, Departmental Mission Statements, Values, recognised professional standards and the changing requirements of the organisation.

- Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control
- Good pass grades at Advanced level mathematics and physics
- IMechE corporate membership

- Familiar with the requirements of the Construction Design and Management regulations
- Practical use of design techniques of hazard identification and risk reduction
