Position Summary:
The Production Engineer is responsible for supporting the efficient delivery of engineering activities related to rolling stock maintenance, overhaul, and modification. This role requires an experienced engineer with a strong understanding of freight wagon and passenger vehicle systems, maintenance practices, and operational requirements. The successful candidate will quickly integrate into the team and make an immediate contribution to production operations.
This position plays a key role in ensuring engineering work is delivered safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with relevant rail industry standards, while providing essential support to workshop and operational teams.
- Provide engineering support for the maintenance, overhaul, and modification of freight rolling stock, with a focus on bogie systems and associated components.
- Produce clear and accurate work instructions, procedures, and technical documentation to support production activities.
- Respond to technical queries from workshop and production teams, delivering practical and safe engineering solutions.
- Raise, track, and manage technical queries with customers, ensuring timely resolution and formal closure.
- Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) for engineering and maintenance activities.
- Collaborate closely with production teams to ensure engineering solutions are practical, safe, and aligned with operational needs.
- Support fault finding, investigation, and root cause analysis of issues affecting freight wagons and components.
- Ensure all engineering work complies with applicable rail standards, safety requirements, and internal procedures.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to enhance reliability, maintainability, and production efficiency.
- Liaise with suppliers, customers, and internal engineering teams to support delivery.
- Manage part numbering conventions and the creation of new part numbers within the ERP system.
Person Profile/Experience:
- Proven experience working with rolling stock, including maintenance, overhaul, or modification activities.
- Strong knowledge of rail vehicle systems and components (e.g. bogies, braking systems, structures, couplings).
- Experience supporting engineering production or workshop environments.
- Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across operations, procurement, and project teams.
- Experience producing engineering documentation and work instructions.
- Good understanding of rail industry standards and safety requirements.
Qualifications:
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
- Ideally Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, or working towards Chartership with a recognised professional institution.
