Responsibilities

  • Safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people in accordance with school safeguarding and child‑protection policies.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries, report safeguarding concerns promptly to the designated safeguarding lead, and contribute to a safe learning environment.
  • Act as a key holder and perform security procedures for school buildings and grounds, including routine and non‑routine opening and locking of premises.
  • Respond to call‑outs outside normal working hours, such as break‑ins or activation of intruder alarms.
  • Facilitate access to premises and classrooms during adverse weather or minor emergency situations (e.g., snow, minor flooding).
  • Handle enquiries from local education authority officers, contractors, and other visitors; notify relevant staff of their presence.
  • Carry out cleaning duties within allocated areas, including secondary cleaning tasks as required.
  • Perform work at height where appropriate safety equipment and training are provided, following Health and Safety requirements.
  • Conduct first‑line repairs and maintenance (basic plumbing, redécoration tasks, fence and boundary repairs).
  • Receive deliveries of stores, materials, and other goods; distribute to designated locations, including dispatch of laundry.
  • Maintain adequate stocks of cleaning materials and other supplies.
  • Operate and monitor the heating plant, ensuring required temperatures and hot water supplies are maintained, and implement frost precaution procedures.
  • Keep all cleaning and maintenance equipment in safe, serviceable condition and arrange repairs when necessary.
  • Carry out routine security and safety checks of the school site.
  • Implement school‑based procedures in events of fire, flood, break‑ins, accidents, or major damage.
  • Test portable electrical equipment where appropriately trained and accredited.
  • Assist with supervision and training of cleaning staff when requested by the Site Manager.
  • Undertake lettings and associated duties under local or provincial agreements.
  • Prepare school buildings and grounds for out‑of‑school activities and events.
  • Assist with completion of documentation for requisition of stores and reporting of repairs.
  • Perform any other reasonable duties associated with the premises, in line with local practice and the reasonable requirements of Co‑Headteachers and the Governing Body.
