This could be the first step on your journey to becoming an amazing teacher. The course lasts 18‑24 months (two academic years). At the end of the program you will receive a Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship, which can lead to roles such as:

  • Teaching Assistant
  • Qualified Teacher Status

Employers are particularly interested in candidates who have a keen interest in providing excellent support within a school environment and working as part of a team. You should demonstrate excellent literacy, numeracy and ICT skills. Potential candidates are expected to have achieved GCSE A‑C or 9‑4 in English, maths (science preferred for those wishing to follow a teaching route). We accept applicants who are currently studying for their GCSEs.

Applicants receive at least £8.00 (April 2026) per hour in the first year, for at least 30 hours per week (including college day) for 52 weeks. You will be entitled to at least 28 days of annual leave per year, including bank holidays, paid in full.

Your assessor will visit you within the workplace to assess progress, and you will attend college for one day per week. Weekly training will take place at Dilkes Academy, South Ockendon. You will develop your skills and knowledge on and off the job, receiving regular supervision and mentoring from your employer.

On completion you can progress to senior teaching assistant level roles, pursue a Foundation Degree, BA Hons and eventually Qualified Teacher Status through Brighton University. Discuss options with Andrea Parfett, ITE and Apprentice Manager.

There are no costs to the apprentice for the programme. Afterward, costs may arise if you pursue a foundation degree, BA Hons, or QTS; you may need a small student loan to cover these expenses.
