This is a fantastic opportunity to train as a Level 2 Early Years Apprentice. It is an advanced pathway for those already working in a school or interested in working with children.

The course runs for one academic year (12 months). At the end of the year you will have gained an Early Years Apprenticeship, which could lead to roles such as:

  • Teaching Assistant
  • Qualified Teacher Status

Who is suitable for an apprenticeship?

Applicants with a keen interest in providing excellent support within a school environment and working as part of a team. You should demonstrate excellent literacy, numeracy and ICT skills. Potential candidates are expected to have achieved GCSE A‑C or 9‑4 in English and maths. Science is preferable if you are considering a teaching route later. We accept applicants currently studying for their GCSEs; the college expects applicants not to need a grade 4 or above, but schools expect this.

As an apprentice you will be paid at least £8.00 per hour (April 2026) for a minimum of 30 hours per week, including college days, for 52 weeks. You will receive 28 days annual leave, including bank holidays, paid at hourly rate.

Your assessor will visit you in the workplace to assess progress. You will attend one day of training per week at Dilkes Academy, South Ockendon. You will develop skills and knowledge on and off the job, with regular supervision and mentoring.

Completing the apprenticeship allows you to move on to Teaching Assistant roles or a Level 3 TA apprenticeship, potentially leading to a teaching degree and QTS.

There are no costs to the apprentice to complete the programme. Costs may arise if you choose to continue to a foundation degree, BA Hons, or QTS, for which a small student loan may be needed.

All apprentices must have employment to complete the apprenticeship. For details on employment support, telephone David Cornwell: 01245 293119 or email cornwelld@chelmsford.ac.uk. For additional information, contact Andrea Parfett at Dilkes Academy: andrea.parfett@catrust.org.uk.
