In this role, you will lead solutions-focused engagements with merchants and their technical teams, helping them translate business goals and operations complexity into clear, scalable technical approaches on Shopify. You will guide merchants through discovery, solution design, architectural tradeoffs, best practices and project execution considerations across their broader commerce ecosystem.

You will advise on complex integrations, identify risks and dependencies, provide guidance that accelerates project delivery, and help ensure merchants are set up for long term success on the platform.

General Responsibilities:

  • Act as an expert generalist across the Shopify platform and ecosystem including Storefronts, Retail/POS, B2B, Payments, partner and app ecosystem, APIs, checkout extensibility and broader commerce architecture.
  • Lead technical discovery with merchants and partners to understand business goals, operational requirements, integration needs, constraints, and success criteria.
  • Consult with merchants on novel and complex shop functionality and business system integrations.
  • Identify when merchant requirements require deeper paid consultation, Professional Services support, partner involvement or Product/Engineering alignment.
  • Combine deep platform knowledge with strong discovery skills - asking sharp questions to scope technical paths, surface risks and dependencies, and help merchants make practical decisions.
  • Work with the merchants’ development, technical, and operational teams to help design solutions for them on the platform.
  • Partner cross-functionally with a number of teams within Shopify including Operations, Production Engineering, Solutions Engineering, Sales, Customer Success, Risk & Legal, Product teams, and many more.
  • Maintain a results-oriented mindset, focusing on impactful merchant outcomes, technical clarity, and practical execution, over process.
  • Prioritize ruthlessly and manage your time effectively across multiple active enterprise engagements in a dynamic environment.

Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of Shopify’s admin, settings, customization model, first party apps, platform primitives, and advanced features like metaobjects, Shopify Functions, checkout extensibility, and API integrations.
  • Functional in at least one programming language, with enough technical fluency to evaluate integration approaches, review implementation patterns, and communicate effectively with development teams.
  • Experience advising on ecommerce architecture, including storefronts, product and collection modeling, checkout flows, customer accounts, payments, subscriptions, fulfillment, and operational workflows.
  • Strong understanding of working with APIs including REST and GraphQL queries, mutations, and objects.
  • Ability to understand and reason through complex merchant ecosystems, including ERPs, OMS, WMS, PSPs, subscription platforms, loyalty systems, tax providers, middleware, and custom applications.
  • Experience with eCommerce website development, including product and collections pages, checkout flows, navigation menus, and eCommerce funnel optimization.
  • Strong technical aptitude and a consistent record of driving complex work to clear outcomes.
  • Ability to operate effectively in ambiguity, simplify or translate technical complexity, and turn unclear merchant needs into actionable solution paths.
  • Superior verbal, presentation, and written communication skills.

How to prepare for a job interview at Shopify

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Shopify uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
