Objectives

To take ownership of the Compliance function and MLRO role across the Shojin Group of companies. This position requires a seasoned compliance professional with extensive experience in real estate law, particularly within the private equity sector. Show strong commercial acumen and operational discipline in implementing and monitoring the function, through robust systems and controls to support business expansion in the UK and globally.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Regulatory Compliance and Risk Management:
    • Ensure compliance with UK laws and regulations, including the Landlord and Tenant Act, Companies Act, planning law, and environmental regulations.
    • Develop and implement policies and procedures to manage regulatory risks and ensure best practices across the firm.
    • Identify and mitigate compliance risks across the platform.
    • Monitor and advise on changes in relevant laws and regulations that may impact the firm’s operations.
    • Identify, assess, and manage compliance risks.
    • Perform regular compliance risk assessments and recommend mitigation strategies.
    • Assist in the Annual ICARA Process.
    • Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulations.
    • Act as the primary point of contact with regulators and oversee regulatory inquiries and inspections.
    • Prepare and submit compliance reports to senior management and, if required, to regulatory bodies.
    • Implement new compliance tools and technologies to streamline processes.
  • AML Responsibilities:
    • Establish and maintain AML policies and procedures that comply with FCA regulations and industry standards.
    • Conduct regular risk assessments to identify potential money laundering risks associated with clients, transactions, and business activities.
    • Develop a risk-based approach to manage identified risks effectively.
    • Ensure robust processes for CDD, including Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures to verify the identities of clients, beneficial owners, and associated parties.
    • Responsible for suspicious activity and transaction monitoring.
    • Develop and provide AML training programs for employees to ensure they understand AML regulations and their roles in preventing money laundering.
    • Foster a culture of compliance and vigilance throughout the organization.
    • Ensure secure and organized records of all AML-related documentation, including CDD information, transaction records, and training materials, in compliance with regulatory requirements.
    • Implement Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) for higher-risk customers.
    • Regularly conduct internal audits and reviews of AML processes to ensure effectiveness and compliance with regulatory obligations.
    • Identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions as needed.
    • Provide regular updates and reports to senior management and the board on AML compliance status, risks, and issues identified.
  • Essential Skills:
