Launch your education career as a Teaching Assistant. Work under teaching staff to provide work, care, and support programmes, ensuring pupils access learning. Assist the teacher with classroom and pupil management while completing the Teaching Assistant Level 3 apprenticeship standard. Wage £13,104 for the first year, with potential increases depending on age. National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices applies. Hours Monday to Friday during school hours with a release to Shipley College on Thursdays. Term time only. 31 hours and 30 minutes per week. Duration 1 year 6 months.

Most of the apprenticeship involves practical work experience, learning on the job.

What you'll do at work:

  • Support the class teacher in pupil management and delivering a differentiated curriculum.
  • Assist in maintaining good discipline of pupils throughout school.
  • Recognise and challenge incidents of racism, bullying, harassment, victimisation and any form of abuse, ensuring compliance with relevant school policy and procedures.
  • Act as a role model, establish productive relationships with pupils, set high expectations, motivate and interact with them, and support their individual needs while ensuring equal access to learning.
  • Cope with the requirements of the post, which may include working with pupils who have emotional, behavioural or physical difficulties.
  • Contribute to the overall ethos, work and aims of the school.
  • Appreciate and support the role of other professionals.
  • Remain vigilant and sensitive to child protection or safeguarding concerns, reporting any concerns to the designated officer.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in managing pupils in the learning environment.
  • Assist in planning learning activities.
  • Administer routine tests, invigilate exams and undertake routine marking of pupils’ work.
  • Undertake structured and agreed learning activities or teaching programmes appropriate to pupils’ needs.
  • Supervise and support pupils consistently at all times, including those with special needs, recognising and responding to their individual needs.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans and Personal Care Programmes; attend to pupils’ personal needs and maintain related personal programmes with correct use of care materials including safety and well-being, therapy and medical intervention needs, first aid, and high standards of cleanliness and hygiene.
  • For posts working with pupils who are physically less able, be capable of providing physical assistance in line with school policies and good practice.
  • Promote inclusion, acceptance and integration of all pupils, including those with special needs and different cultural or language backgrounds.
  • Set challenging expectations while promoting self-esteem, encouraging pupils to act independently and collaborate with others in teacher-led activities.
  • Prepare, create and maintain an orderly learning environment that meets lesson plans.
  • Take responsibility for the care, preparation, maintenance and use of relevant equipment, and assist pupils in its use.
  • Monitor pupil progress, record responses against pre-determined learning objectives and provide accurate, constructive feedback to the teacher and pupils.
  • Promote positive values, attitudes and good pupil behaviour and encourage pupils to take responsibility for their actions while supporting the teacher in managing this.

Training: Apprenticeships include time away from work for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

  • Comply with legislation, guidance, and procedures for Prevent, safeguarding and health & safety.
  • Support the well-being and mental health of learners.
  • Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
  • Apply methods of formative assessment.
  • Use up-to-date technology safely to support learning.
  • Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (e.g., scaffolding, open questioning).
  • Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
  • Provide feedback to learners.

Training includes a day release at Shipley College on Thursdays, with regular assessor workplace visits to support progress.

Requirements:

  • GCSE in English (grade 4+, A*-C or L2 equivalent).
  • GCSE in Maths (grade 4+, A*-C or L2 equivalent).
  • Share any other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
