Dementia NPHSupport & Development Worker

Part Time, 21 hoursa week over 3/4 days

Purpose of the role

  • Deliver a high-quality service to and facilitate opportunities for, individuals living with NPH/dementia and their families/carers through Shine membership across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  • Empower and enable members living with the conditions to lead healthy and happy lives through greater independence, better condition management and by creating links to the Shine community and their local networks.
  • Raise awareness of NPH across Health & Social Care professionals and the public.
  • Support the planning and delivery of the annual NPH Awareness Week.
  • As part of a high performing team, support Shine to be recognised as the number one provider of support for NPH outside of the NHS.
  • Promote and support all Shine’s services and activities.

You will have a focus on NPH support across England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

  • To provide specialist NPH (non-health) information to individuals living with NPH, their families and carers.
  • You will develop referral pathways with local networks i.e. local branches of Age UK who can support our members living with NPH and their carers, to access information and benefits support.
  • You will develop relationships with partners and organisations who support people living with dementia on a local or national level, where there will be a benefit for our members and their carers.
  • To provide advice, support and guidance to enable people with NPH and/or their carers to access the correct benefits to become financially stable, the right services to improve their health and well-being, and to better co-ordinate their support and independence through a variety of methods.
  • Occasional attendance at NPH clinics to maintain and build positive relationships.
  • To refer individual members and/or their families/carers to the most appropriate source of expertise and support in Shine’s Health team and other designated leads within the organisation, or signpost to external agencies as appropriate.
  • To develop and manage appropriate condition specific groups and peer support networks which will provide opportunities for people with NPH to connect and interact.
  • To contribute to the delivery of national programme of events to Shine’s members living with NPH or their carers. These will be face-to-face and virtual events.
  • Alongside the NPH Manager, help develop the new Shine NPH education programme portfolio.
  • Recruit, develop, train and supervise volunteers to support delivery of the NPH education programme portfolio.
  • To raise greater awareness of NPH amongst professionals, external organisations and the general public through presentations, training and attendance at professional events.
  • To keep clear and accurate records for monitoring and evaluation using our Salesforce database system.

You will also be supporting wider Shine services and will be expected to undertake any other duties in line with the job role.

Skills and Experience

  • Ability to travel across England, Wales & Northern Ireland as required.
  • Ability to work flexibly. This may include some evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to work from home.
  • The ability to be motivated and work on your own initiative with lone working from home, whilst also travelling across the area and region to be part of the wider dispersed team.
  • Full Enhanced DBS checks, UK Right to Work checks and referencing will be completed.
  • At least two years’ recent experience of delivering support and advice services to people living with dementia and/or NPH.
  • At least two years’ experience of supporting carers in their caring role including accessing statutory support.
  • At least two years’ experience of advising on one or more of the following: health and wellbeing; independence; benefits; education and learning; reducing isolation; social care;
    housing.
  • Experience of developing and delivering opportunities to enable and empower people with disabilities to achieve their goals towards independence.
  • Understanding of normal pressure hydrocephalus and dementia and the issues and challenges faced by people living with these conditions and their carers.
  • Ability to work with people individually and to facilitate and run group activities and events.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbally and written.
  • IT literate with a good knowledge of CRM systems eg Salesforce and Microsoft programmes (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams), zoom and social media platforms.
  • A non-judgemental approach to working with people.
  • Hold a qualification in a health, nursing, social care or disability related field.
  • Experience of working in the third sector in a paid or unpaid capacity.
  • Experience of working with people of all ages with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of spina bifida and hydrocephalus.
  • Understanding of the role peer support plays in enhancing services and support to members.
  • An awareness and understanding of how to use social media and its effectiveness in reducing social isolation.
