We're recruiting an Application Engineer for a Sheffield machining business that supports demanding aerospace and high-spec work.
The role is hands on, technical and customer-facing.
They want someone who can get into the detail of a process, improve it properly, and explain it clearly.
Start is as soon as possible for the right person.
What you'll actually do
Review existing machining methods and tighten them up - better process control, better consistency, less wasted time.
Build proper process control into jobs: probing, setup aids, cut/measure/cut routines, and reliable data.
When something goes wrong, work out why before you change anything.
First-principles thinking is the point of the job.
Challenge the way things are currently done.
If a process is slow, unstable or over-complicated, you're expected to question it and improve it.
Understand machine tool kinematics and what the machine can and can't do.
Run time studies on customer parts and show where the real savings are.
Design custom fixturing or tooling when the standard approach isn't good enough.
Explain your methodology clearly to customers and colleagues.
You need to be able to talk people through what you're doing and why.
Work as part of a team and share ideas rather than keep them to yourself.
You'll also need to be comfortable with ISO G-code and macro cycles.
Experience writing and testing post processors, or with Zoller TMS, is useful but not essential.
What you need
Solid experience operating, setting and programming CNC machines for both milling and turning. 5-axis mill/turn is ideal.
Large scale machining experience is preferred.
Strong CAD/CAM skills - Siemens NX is the preference.
Experience working to Rolls-Royce standards is a clear advantage.
You've designed fixturing before.
Vericut (or RMVM) experience.
Practical knowledge of probing cycles for setup and in-process inspection.
Comfortable on Siemens Sinumerik controls, including tool data, monitoring and cycles.
A practical, problem solving approach.
If something isn't cutting right, you know how to diagnose it at the machine rather than just throw changes at it.
