The role is responsible for leading and continuously improving the sites Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) management systems, ensuring full legal and corporate compliance. The postholder will drive a strong safety culture through audits, training, incident investigation, risk management, and effective communication, while acting as the key site contact for regulators, corporate EHS teams, and external stakeholders. This role also supports operational safety, emergency preparedness, contractor control, and where applicable process safety, waste management, security, and people management.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and improve the Health, Safety and Environmental Management Systems, ensuring all policies are up to date, relevant, in compliance with the law, implemented effectively and meet the requirements of local accreditations.
  • Identify gaps in legislative compliance, SW guideline compliance and review performance information. In conjunction with the site management, develop plans to close any gaps.
  • Ensure EHS management systems undergo management review on a regular basis, incorporating improvements, including those identified through legislative and performance review.
  • Audit EHS procedures and standards in practice and identify where standards are not being met. Instigate corrective actions with relevant departments and make amendments/improvements to procedures where appropriate.
  • Maintain appropriate EHS records, data and timely reporting.
  • Ensure root cause analysis investigation is completed for all incidents, appropriate action is identified and ensure all actions are closed.
  • Control the site Hazard, Near Miss and Reportable database (legal compliance by country).
  • Liaison and participation with Regional and Corporate EHS colleagues, through calls, meetings and implementation of SW Corporate standards.
  • May have responsibility for Permit to work management on site issuing the correct permits to contractors/suppliers.
  • If working on a COMAH/SEVESO site, abide by local regulations to ensure all requirements are met.
  • Provide information on occupational health related concerns with support from occupational health resource.
  • Initiation of any necessary occupational hygiene monitoring and provide advice and guidance on the results.
  • Use hierarchy of control measures to minimise exposure to hazardous substances, and danger from flammable, explosive, electrical, noise, manual handling risks and other hazards.
  • Ensure efficient EHS communication via EHS Committee Meetings, attendance and sharing information from EHS EMEAI meetings and EHS Alerts from other sites.
  • Promote safety messaging at the start of every meeting.
  • Promote a continually improving safety culture through the support and leading of EHS sub-committees with employee involvement.
  • May be responsible for waste management controlling waste streams, reconciliation of waste documents through identifying, classifying and controlling correctly.
  • External liaison with regulators, consultants, trade and professional bodies to ensure compliance and capture best practice.
  • Acts as point of contact for any internal or external audits.
  • Liaise with insurance investigators on 3rd Party liability claims.
  • Identify, develop and facilitate appropriate safety, health and environmental training and refresher training.
  • Facilitate process safety processes such as HAZID and HAZOP.
  • Ensure Emergency Preparedness ensuring appropriate training and test run scenarios. To ensure contingency plans are current.
  • Provides out of hours emergency contact service.
  • Ensures fire-fighting equipment is appropriately maintained.
  • Supervises local EHS team, including hiring, training, evaluating performance, providing compensation recommendations, and determining disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Accountable for the security operation on site.
  • Investigates to root cause any security incidents and ensures timely action completion.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Environmental Studies, Health and Safety, or a related field or equivalent education and experience.
  • Eight years of progressive EHS experience, to include the administration of broad EHS programs.
  • Managing comprehensive health, safety, and environmental programs.
  • Applying specialized knowledge in an area of health, environmental, and safety programs.
  • Coordinating activities with regulatory agencies.
  • Leading site procedural and operational audits.
  • Providing direction and consultation on various health, safety, and environmental issues.
  • Developing and implementing programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Interpreting and applying department policies and procedures and applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Facilitating and resolving sensitive health, safety, and environmental questions and concerns.
  • Working as a member of a management team.
  • PC skills; Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); and other applicable applications.
  • Communicating with co-workers to provide and receive direction.
