Automation and Control Engineer – Sherwin-Williams
We are seeking an experienced Automation and Control Engineer to oversee all automation and control systems that regulate our paint and sealant manufacturing operations at Sheffield. This critical role ensures equipment reliability, minimizes downtime, and drives continuous improvement across our production processes.
Responsibilities
- Act as the site lead for all ICs systems, ensuring optimal performance and minimal production downtime.
- Oversee programming, servicing, fault‑finding, and troubleshooting for PLCs, SCADA, HMIs, electrical controls, and distribution systems.
- Serve as the technical expert, providing operational support and training to engineering and maintenance teams.
- Manage service contracts with ICs vendors and develop plans to increase site self‑sufficiency.
- Create and maintain control system documentation and backups.
- Lead the ICs obsolescence program, identifying critical assets and investment needs.
- Specify ICs equipment, prepare cost estimates, and manage procurement and fabrication.
- Support continuous improvement projects from concept through commissioning.
- Maintain accurate records in the CMMS for trend analysis and reliability improvements.
- Ensure compliance with all safety standards, including Permit to Work, Lock Out Tag Out, and Risk Assessment systems.
- Provide out‑of‑hours remote support as required.
Qualifications
- Degree in a relevant Engineering discipline or significant technical/professional experience in automation and controls.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in engineering or maintenance roles with exposure to ICs systems.
- Strong knowledge of PLC and SCADA systems, including programming and troubleshooting.
- Proven experience with Rockwell Automation and Siemens platforms.
- Experience in PLC programming (Allen‑Bradley and Siemens) and SCADA development (Ignition, InTouch).
- Understanding of industrial networks (DeviceNet, Ethernet/IP, Profibus).
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics and P&IDs.
- Excellent troubleshooting, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
- Experience in commissioning and site support.

- Certified in Continuous Improvement tools (Six Sigma, Lean, Root Cause Analysis).
- Have knowledge of industry standards (ISA, IEC, PIP) and Process Safety Management.
- Familiarity with ATEX/DSEAR regulations and SEVESO/COMAH awareness.
- An understanding of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement techniques.
