The Head of EAL plays a central role in ensuring that pupils for whom English is an additional language are fully supported academically, socially, and linguistically so that they can thrive within the demands of a UK boarding school.

The post-holder leads the strategic development of EAL provision across the school, designing a coherent curriculum that equips pupils with the language skills needed for successful access to the wider academic programme. This includes overseeing diagnostic assessments, coordinating tailored intervention pathways, and ensuring high-quality teaching that promotes rapid and sustained language acquisition.

The Head of EAL also works closely with subject departments to advise on effective classroom strategies, scaffolding, and differentiation, ensuring that EAL learners are both challenged and supported. Beyond the academic remit, the Head of EAL plays a vital pastoral role, helping international pupils adjust to the cultural and linguistic demands of boarding life.

Building strong relationships with House staff, tutors, and parents, both in the UK and overseas, the post-holder ensures clear communication and consistent support structures for each pupil. They champion cultural inclusion across the school community, promoting intercultural awareness and celebrating linguistic diversity.

As a member of the wider academic leadership team, the Head of EAL contributes to whole-school policy development, staff training, and strategic planning.
