Sherborne School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Applicants for this post must be willing to undergo child protection screening, including reference checks with previous employers and a criminal record check with the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Location: Sherborne School, with occasional work across other group sites

Reporting to: Director of Risk Management

Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week, hours of work are likely to be 8.30am – 5.00pm Monday to Friday less an hour for lunch. Flexibility in hours will be required on occasion to meet the demands of the post.

Salary: Up to £42,000.00 per annum depending on skills and experience. Salary will be paid monthly in arrears direct into your nominated bank account.

Holidays: Entitlement is 5 weeks holiday per year + Bank Holidays. Attendance will be required on Bank Holidays that fall during term time, for which time off in lieu will be given. Holiday only to be taken following prior authorisation from the Director of Risk Management, taking into account busy periods; the holiday year runs from 1 July to 30 June.

Pension: The post-holder will be able to join the Sherborne School Support Staff Pension Scheme on the first day of the month after completion of two months service. Where eligible, the post-holder will be auto‑enrolled into the Pension Scheme as per current legislation; further details may be obtained from the Head of Human Resources (Bursary).

Probationary Period: In accordance with School policy, all appointments are subject to a six‑month probationary period.

Medical Self: The offer of appointment at Sherborne School will be conditional upon the provision of a self‑declaration of physical and mental fitness to discharge the responsibilities of the role.

DBS Disclosure (Police Check) References: As Sherborne School is registered to ask ‘exempted questions’ under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, successful applicants will be subject to a criminal record check from the Disclosure and Barring Service before the appointment is confirmed. This will include details of cautions, reprimands or final warnings; further details are available upon request. This post is also subject to receipt of two satisfactory written references, one of which must be your current / last employer.

Post-holder’s Responsibility: You share with all staff the responsibility to promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people for whom you are responsible, or with whom you come into contact. In doing so, you are expected at all times to adhere to and ensure compliance with the School’s Child Protection Policy Statement. If you become aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the School, you must report any concerns to the School’s Designated Safeguarding Lead (Child Protection Officers).

Core Purpose: The Health, Safety & Risk Manager is responsible for providing advice and support to the School community in order to ensure that all health, safety and fire legislation and relevant standards are adhered to, and appropriate policies and practices are adopted. The Health, Safety & Risk Manager will provide expert skills and knowledge to the school community in order to generate and promote a positive health and safety culture. The Health, Safety & Risk Manager will plan, implement, monitor and review the protective and preventative measures and work to minimise accidents, injuries and occupational health problems. The Health, Safety & Risk Manager will provide advice and support to the Head and other senior staff on general risk management and compliance issues, driving improvements in the management of risk across all areas of the school. The Health, Safety & Risk Manager role is primarily focussed on Sherborne School, Sherborne Prep and Sherborne International. Some support to other Group Schools (Sherborne Girls and Hanford) may be required on occasion, as directed by the Director of Risk Management.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Review, develop, implement and promote effective health and safety strategies, policies, procedures and systems;
  • Maintain an overview of approaches to risk management across all areas of the School, identifying and sharing good practices and providing advice and support to staff at all levels on the identification and management of risk;
  • Influence those responsible for the approval and implementation of policies and for the management of risk to drive continual improvement in standards and the way risks are managed;
  • Carry out specialist risk assessments, identifying appropriate control measures and driving their implementation;
  • Outline safe operational procedures which identify and take account of all relevant hazards;
  • Carry out regular site inspections to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented;
  • Plan practical and effective methods, both proactive and reactive, of promoting health and safety and safe working practices and demonstrating compliance to declared standards/policies;
  • Support SLT, Heads of Department, departmental managers and line managers in the preparation, implementation and review of general risk assessments;
  • Implementing and maintaining safe systems of work for staff, pupils and others;
  • Implementing systems and procedures to meet all specific health and safety legislative requirements, such as accident reporting, COSHH etc.;
  • Ensuring the safe selection, installation and commissioning of machinery and equipment;
  • Access professional support and guidance from other relevant organisations and external sources as necessary;
  • Support and work closely with the HR Department with regard to providing advice on employee wellbeing, risk assessments, return to work and any other aspect felt to be of benefit to the Group;
  • Attend the School’s Health and Safety Committee meetings and, where required, relevant governing body committees;
  • Advise on changes to working practices that are safe and comply with legislation.
