Senior Contracts Advisor

This is an exciting opportunity to join Shell Trading’s Energy Contracts Team in London. As a Senior Contracts Advisor, you will play a key role in supporting Shell’s Energy trading desks, working closely with Trading, Origination and support functions. You will negotiate complex power and environmental products agreements, provide commercially focused contractual advice and help the business manage risk while delivering its strategic objectives. The role covers the full contracting lifecycle, from pre-deal advice and contract drafting through to negotiation, internal approval, execution and records management. You will work on industry-standard commodity contracts, bespoke energy agreements and other documentation supporting the physical and financial delivery of energy products. The role is based at Shell’s London office on York Road.

What you’ll be doing:

• Providing commercially focused pre-deal and post-deal advice to traders and originators on contractual, commercial and financial risks, including opportunities for value creation and potential value leakage.
• Drafting, reviewing and negotiating complex contracts for the purchase, sale, trading and delivery of power and environmental products.
• Ensuring contracts accurately reflect the agreed commercial terms and comply with Shell’s policies, procedures and governance requirements.
• Identifying risks arising from deviations from Shell’s standard terms and coordinating input from Credit, Finance, Tax, Legal, Regulatory, Compliance, Risk and Operations.
• Securing the necessary internal approvals and supporting the timely execution of contracts and other trading documentation.
• Maintaining accurate contract records in line with Shell’s records management policies and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Developing commercially pragmatic solutions that support business priorities while appropriately managing contractual risk.
• Building strong working relationships with traders, originators, support functions and external counterparties to resolve contractual, commercial and operational issues efficiently.
• Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives, contract template development and the promotion of best practice across the Contracts function.
• Mentoring and developing Contracts Advisors, supporting onboarding and training, and promoting consistent negotiation and drafting standards across the team.

What you bring:

• A bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant professional experience.
• Extensive experience drafting, analysing and negotiating energy or commodity trading agreements.
• Experience with power and/or environmental products documentation, such as EFET Power agreements, ISDA Agreements, Credit Support Annexes, DRVs, Emissions Master Agreements or other agreements relating to compliance and voluntary environmental products.
• Strong commercial acumen and the ability to draft and negotiate agreements that preserve value, manage risk and support the needs of Trading and Origination.
• Experience navigating complex contractual, regulatory and compliance requirements within a large, international or highly regulated organisation.
• The ability to quickly understand and apply governance processes and control frameworks.
• Strong stakeholder-management and influencing skills, with the ability to build effective relationships across a complex organisation and with external counterparties.
• An understanding of the operational lifecycle of a deal and the functions involved throughout the contracting process.
• The ability to manage a demanding workload, prioritise competing requirements and deliver to short deadlines.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and judgement skills, with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to interpret complex contractual information, identify risks and inconsistencies, and recommend a clear course of action.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain contractual provisions and commercial positions clearly.
• A proactive, self-motivated and collaborative approach, with the ability to work autonomously and contribute positively to a team environment.
• Fluency in written German or Italian would be advantageous.
