Join to apply for the Intraday Power Trader role at Shell.
Shell Trading integrates a worldwide trading network with an unsurpassed global portfolio in crude oil, refined products, natural gas, electrical power, and chemicals and has large locations in London, Houston, Calgary, Singapore, Dubai, Rotterdam, and Barbados. Shell Trading is one of the world’s largest energy traders and is a key segment of the Shell portfolio.
What’s The Role
The UK Power Short Term Trading desk forms part of the European Power trading organisation. The Short Term Trader is part of a team responsible for supporting the commercial and operational management of SE‑EA’s (Shell Energy Europe & Africa) power activities in the UK. The SE‑EA power portfolio is an industry‑leading mix of remotely operated generation assets, flexible renewable generation and algorithmically controlled battery storage assets. The UK Power Short Term Trading Team was the first team ever to control aggregated generation units in the GB’s balancing mechanism via the use of algorithms. The team continues to be the market leader in terms of short‑term optimisation of physical assets. This role would be focused on trading our renewables portfolio and taking spec positions to maximise the P&L. You would also have exposure to our battery and thermal portfolio, working closely with the 24/7 shift team (the role itself does not involve nights). Opportunities to trade interconnectors/related continental markets are also available.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Actively trade power and interconnector capacities in the short‑term markets, including day‑ahead, intra‑day, and balancing markets, delivering material P&L.
- Utilise automated trading systems where feasible to respond to market changes instantly and deliver improvements to algorithmic trading strategies.
- Analyse market trends, regulatory changes, grid stability, interconnector flows, and economic indicators that impact the power and capacity markets across borders.
- Implement risk management strategies to minimise financial exposure related to power and capacity trades, continuously monitoring positions against market movements and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate with other desks, functions and system operators to align strategies and manage the portfolio’s exposure, and participate in market operator forums to stay ahead of industry changes.
- Produce detailed reports on trading activities, performance metrics and market conditions, and present findings and strategies to internal stakeholders.
- Mentor and develop junior traders to ensure effective knowledge transfer regarding market dynamics, execution strategies and risk frameworks, supporting their commercial growth and decision‑making capabilities to build a resilient and high‑performing team.
- Partner with quantitative analysts and developers to drive the build‑out of advanced trading tools, fundamental models and automation, identify opportunities to enhance desk capabilities and translate analytical insights into actionable commercial strategies that maximise value capture.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and contractual customer obligations, including REMIT, the Grid Code and Shell policies.
What You Bring
- Proven track record for spec trading at short‑term power markets.
- In‑depth knowledge of the UK and European energy markets, understanding key market drivers and trading regulations.
- Strong quantitative skills, with proficiency in sophisticated trading and analytical platforms.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, or a related field.
- Excellent decision‑making abilities, capable of performing under pressure in a fast‑paced environment.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex trading strategies clearly.
- Self‑starter, able to effectively multi‑task and prioritise their own workload and the wider team’s deliverables.
