The Network Engineering Solutions and Sustainability (NESS) organization sits within the Global Network and E-mobility organisation in M&C and plays a critical role in operationalizing and delivering M&C’s strategy. The Role
The successful candidate for the Fuels & NFR Engineering Manager role will lead a Centre of Excellence (CoE) with deep expertise across conventional & gaseous fuels, NFR (with particular emphasis on Shop and Carwash), and formats; requiring a very solid engineering and technical backbone, as well as the ability to apply a pragmatic and commercial lens to credibly partner with markets & spearhead our Engineering transformational efforts in line with M&C Focused, Faster, and Future Ready strategy. Our ambition is to become the benchmark through localization, simplification, optimization, as well as innovation and driving step change where needed while building local and global capability.
This role acts as key trusted techno-commercial leader across M&C, leading strong business partnership with the markets to drive localization of standards and the delivery of top quartile capex programs including care & maintain and growth projects, whilst delivering engineering maintenance safely, effectively, competitively, and efficiently.
More specifically, the successful candidate is:
- A senior techno-commercial leader, member of the Global Engineering & Sustainability Leadership Team (ESLT), and Team Lead for five Engineering Subject Matter Experts who will drive an exciting global transformation in Fuels, NFR, and Formats, including the delivery of cost optimization opportunities to the tune of ~$100-200mln/yr across M&C (Project Hercules); and of M&C’s annual Engineering Opex (~$220mln/yr) + Capex (~$800mln-$1bln/yr) across Asset Integrity, Care & Maintain, as well as Value Add / growth projects effectively, efficiently, competitively, and safely.
- Senior leader to a global community of engineers across markets, with deep experience and expertise across Fuels, NFR, and formats, accountable to inspire and exemplify the principles and values required to win locally while leveraging our global scale and capabilities.
- Have experience and expertise to lead deep subject matter experts in designing zero based value engineering (ZBVE) concepts across all fuels and NFR, while collaborating with local markets to test and deploy with a CI lens.
- Drive an effective and efficient partnership with Marketing, Network Planning, and other key global functions, while staying credibly connected with markets to champion cross-functional collaboration by integrating fuel system solutions with other offerings, lead the technical design of formats with a customer-back lens, and strategically enable the integration of E2E solutions and formats.
- Accountable for developing and assuring fit-for-purpose Global Engineering Design Standards and Brand assurance for all Fuels, NFR & Formats scope across Shell's 44k sites globally, adopting industry standards with minimal ‘Shall’ mandates, able to translate and localize the principles of Project Hercules into local market requirements while managing risks to ALARP.
- Accountable to drive compliance as Mobility TA2 (Technical Authority) with the ‘evolved’ M&C Fuels & Formats Design Standards in Discipline Control and Assurance Framework (DCAF Evolve), maintaining a healthy and fit-for purpose TA framework and ensuring capability and competency both at global and local levels (also accountable to define accreditation requirements for the Fuels, NFR & Formats community, and the development of key capability building materials).
- Accountable to develop and maintain an effective, efficient, safe, and competitive asset strategy for fuels, NFR and formats and for the optimization of the technical scope and specification of the agreed GFA contracts including TCO and after sales services.
- NESS representative in Brand Enablement Forum (BEF) in providing technical support and fit for purpose decision making.
- Capacity and capability to achieve SME TA2 at pace to develop local market capabilities (TA3BC), drive effective MoC process, and HSSE investigation support.
What We Need from You
- Technical education to first degree level and preferably professional qualification or chartership.
- Significant experience (+10yrs) in Engineering role in Mobility, T&S, Manufacturing, P&T or similar with proven background in fuel system design, technology, value-based engineering and innovation (deep expertise across both traditional and gaseous fuels as well as practical front-line experience are strongly desired).
- Required to have, or to work proactively (at strong pace) towards TA2 (Technical Authority) for Fuels and NFR Design Standards in DCAF for the Mobility business including managing compliance to in-scope elements of the HSSE Performance Framework.
- Proven experience in global, multi-cultural and senior level stakeholder management, both internal and external. The candidate should have a broad range of interpersonal skills being able to influence stakeholders in a virtual environment without direct line responsibility.
- Proven experience in driving material transformation / change and engage programs. Expertise and capability to partner with markets to credibly optimize, innovate, and drive continuous improvement and cross functional learning.
- Demonstrable competence in developing, implementing, and monitoring Fit for Purpose Global Standards that enable pragmatic ALARP solutions safely. Capacity to translate and localize the principles of Project Hercules across fuels & NFR into local market requirements while managing risks to ALARP.
- Ability to create effective strategies (fuels assets, as well as NFR and formats) and optimize the technical scope and specification of the agreed GFA contracts including TCO and after sales services.
- Ability to demonstrate visible HSSE leadership and drive high Safety culture across markets and through partner and supplier organizations. Expertise in SGW and Fuels RBSAM risk management.
- Deeply understand and staying up to date with industry practices and trends, bringing the external lens proactively, as well as acting as Shell’s Senior SME externally to influence and advocate, as needed.
- Solid Project Management skills – Being able to lead and drive work across multiple teams and workstreams to ensure the successful delivery of an opportunity.
- Learner Mindset – passion for trouble shooting, eagerly taking data-based decisions to develop and sell new propositions, working collaboratively with customers and stakeholders to deliver optimal solutions.
- Track record of delivery – A ‘can-do’ attitude, passion for achievement, as well as the energy transition, is important.
