Academy Doctor (part-time) in Sheffield

Play a key role in protecting the health, development and wellbeing of Sheffield United's next generation of players

Sheffield United Football Club are looking to appoint an Academy Doctor to provide high-quality medical care across the club's Academy programme, alongside supporting the Men's First Team as tunnel doctor for home fixtures.

This is an important position within the Academy's multidisciplinary team, supporting the medical needs of young players throughout their development pathway. As the club's appointed Academy Doctor, you will combine clinical expertise with an understanding of the unique demands of working with developing athletes in an elite football environment.

Working closely with the Academy's medical, performance and coaching teams, you will provide regular clinical provision, support injury and illness management, oversee medical screening and referrals, and provide pitch-side cover across Academy fixtures. The role will also form part of the club's Men's First Team matchday medical provision, acting as tunnel doctor for home fixtures.

This is a part-time position of 20 hours per week, offering an excellent opportunity for a doctor looking to combine professional football with an existing clinical portfolio. The working pattern requires flexibility around the football schedule and will include regular on-site Academy provision, Academy matchday cover and Men's First Team home fixtures. Where First Team home match cover is not required, those hours will instead be utilised within the Academy programme.

The impact you'll make

• Provide dedicated medical care to Academy players, delivering regular training-ground clinics and supporting the assessment, diagnosis and ongoing management of injury and illness.
• Provide pitch-side medical cover across U18 and U21 home fixtures, working closely with physiotherapists, paramedics, opposition medical teams and other matchday personnel.
• Support the Men's First Team matchday medical provision as tunnel doctor for home fixtures, working alongside the First Team medical team and wider matchday personnel.
• Coordinate specialist medical care, overseeing referrals, investigations and consultant appointments and accompanying players to consultations or surgery where required.
• Support the management of player injuries, working collaboratively with the Academy's medical and performance practitioners to ensure joined-up care throughout the rehabilitation process.
• Oversee Academy medical screening, including annual medical testing, player medical interviews and relevant FA cardiac screening for new Academy scholars.
• Communicate effectively with young players and their families, working alongside parents and guardians as well as physiotherapists, coaches and wider Academy staff to provide a high standard of medical support.
• Maintain high standards of medical governance, including secure and accurate medical records, appropriate medicines and equipment management and adherence to professional and club requirements.
• Support the development of the wider Sports Medicine team, maintaining your own continued professional development while sharing medical knowledge and education with colleagues.
• Help create a safe environment for young players, embedding strong safeguarding practices and supporting the club's commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

Your skills and experience

We are looking for a doctor who combines strong clinical judgement with excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach to multidisciplinary working.

You will bring:

• A medical degree (MBBS, MBChB or equivalent).
• Full GMC registration, with a current licence to practise in the UK and up-to-date appraisal/revalidation.
• A postgraduate qualification in Sport & Exercise Medicine.
• A current FA Advanced Trauma Medical Management in Football (ATMMiF) qualification, or recognised equivalent.
• Relevant clinical experience within General Practice, Sport & Exercise Medicine, Emergency Medicine or another appropriate speciality.
• Experience working within sport or another high-performance multidisciplinary environment.
• A strong understanding of clinical governance, confidentiality and medical record keeping.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships with young players, parents and guardians, medical practitioners and wider Academy staff.
• Enhanced DBS clearance, or willingness to undertake an Enhanced DBS check and the required safeguarding training.
• The flexibility to work around the football schedule, including Academy fixtures, Men's First Team home matches and other requirements outside typical working hours.

Previous experience within professional football or an elite football Academy would be advantageous, as would experience providing medical care to children and adolescent athletes, knowledge of EPPP medical requirements and Academy medical governance, MRCGP or another relevant postgraduate membership, and an FA safeguarding qualification.
