This role is within the Microbiology Admin Team at Northern General Hospital and requires an experienced and proactive senior secretary with a proven track record in hospital administration and team working. The post holder must be able to work independently and take a proactive approach.

The Laboratory Medicine Directorate includes departments such as Automated Blood Sciences, Specialist Blood Sciences, Blood Transfusion, Point of Care Testing, Microbiology, Virology, and Histology, with laboratories at Northern General Hospital and Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, some linked with external NHS Trusts.

The service supports diagnosis of infections and diseases, serving inpatients, outpatients, and community services, and provides specialist testing for other hospitals.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Oversee daily administration and clerical operations, ensuring adequate staffing and managing rotas.
  2. Prioritize workload and coordinate activities related to the role.
  3. Ensure efficient office processes to meet turnaround times and support junior team members.
  4. Analyze information to identify trends, reorganize practices, and report findings.
  5. Maintain operational procedures and standards, suggesting improvements for quality service.
  6. Assist in reviewing and implementing policies to meet guidelines.
  7. Ensure throughput of workloads to meet targets.

This position is part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology Partnership, which aims to deliver high-quality, sustainable pathology services across the ICS footprint, including several NHS Trusts.
