The predicted salary is between 80000 - 120000 £ per year.

We are looking to appoint to a whole-time Locum General Consultant Anaesthetist to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is a fixed term post for 12 months, commencing in May 2025. We would welcome applications from candidates across the full spectrum of experience, from those who have recently completed training to those who have well-established careers. Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues. Should any further vacancies arise shortlisted applicants will be considered.

Main duties of the job:

  • The appointee will, together with Consultant colleagues, be responsible for the provision of anaesthetic services to the Trust.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide safe, evidence-based medicine.
  • Pursue continuous improvement in the quality of care that we provide.
  • Ensure we work to the PROUD Behaviours values, with the patient at the heart of what we do.
  • Provide an outstanding environment for our junior doctors to train.
  • Maintain skills and update knowledge base meeting the Continuing Education and Professional Development requirements of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.
  • Actively participate in the QI and audit ambitions of the Department.
  • Participate in the Obstetrics Anaesthesia on-call rota at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.
  • Be prepared to work on all sites where elective surgical work is undertaken.
  • The successful candidate would inevitably have responsibility for resource utilisation and would be expected to be aware of and take part in the Directorate business planning process which governs new developments.
  • Some flexibility within duties dependent on the exigencies of service need will be expected from the appointee.

Person specification:

Qualifications

  • Essential criteria: Registered with the GMC with a licence to practise.
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent.
  • Desirable criteria: Name on the specialist register for relevant specialty or eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview.

Research

  • Essential criteria: Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate.
  • Desirable criteria: Publications in Peer reviewed journals.

Personal Attributes

  • Essential criteria: Demonstrates behaviour consistent with PROUD values.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • The applicant must demonstrate skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking the English language that enables effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues as set out in the GMC’ good medical practice (2013).

Clinical Governance and Audit

  • Essential criteria: Experience in performing clinical audit.
  • Desirable criteria: Completion and publication of a substantive audit project or service improvement project.

Management and administration

  • Essential criteria: Evidence of the understanding of the systems and structures of NHS Management.

Continuous Professional Development

  • Essential criteria: Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months.
  • Desirable criteria: Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio.

Teaching and Training

  • Essential criteria: Experience of teaching student doctors and doctors in training at all levels.

Clinical Experience

  • Essential criteria: Ability to work as an independent practitioner in the General Anaesthesia.
  • Appropriate training and experience in General anaesthesia.
