Exercise Physiologist

To assess, plan and deliver physical activity and rehabilitation programmes

To assess the progress of patients during their time within the stroke pathway and to adapt their programmes appropriately to ensure safe and effective exercise, physio, and rehabilitation.

To promote healthy living in patients and support behaviour change.

Adopt a personalised care approach to management of patients

Address health inequalities through provision of service as a priority in patient care and service development.

Contribute to the operational management and continuous improvement of the stroke \’one stop\’ service.

Main duties of the job

To frequently undertake the comprehensive assessment of patients, with a complex presentation, requiring prolonged concentration to investigate and analyse the assessment to formulate individualised management and treatment plans, using clinical reasoning and a wide range of treatment skills and options to formulate a specialised programme of care.

To use continuous assessment to evaluate treatment outcomes and adjust treatment plans accordingly, appropriately referring to other agencies to meet patients\’ needs and promote integration of services.

To receive and communicate complex, sensitive, or contentious information to patients and carers, who may have barriers to understanding, e.g. dysphasic, complex mental health problems, to maximise rehabilitation potential and to ensure understanding of conditions.

To have expert verbal and non-verbal communication skills of motivation, explanation, and reassurance to agree and gain co-operation of patients and carers in their treatment programmes.

To provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction to relatives, carers, and other professionals, to promote understanding of the aims of physiotherapy and to ensure a consistent approach to patient care and treatment e.g. moving and handling.

Contribute and propose changes in the development and implementation of service changes within clinical areas and policy development.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

• BSc in Sports & Exercise Science/Exercise Physiology or closely related subject
• Academy of Healthcare Science (AHCS) registration via AHCS accredited MSc in Clinical Exercise Physiology or via AHCS Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) equivalence pathway OR Eligible and willing to work towards AHCS registration within 6 months of employment (please review eligibility).
• Evidence of post graduate development of knowledge and skills rehabilitation or stroke.
• Demonstrate commitment to Continuous Professional Development via personal development plans/file
• AHCS registration as a CEP annually maintained
• Training from a recognised provider for undergraduate student supervision

Experience

• Completion of post-registration roles in a range of clinical areas e.g. cardiac Rehabilitation, exercise testing.
• Experience of leading structured and graded exercise programmes for people with cardiovascular and co-morbid conditions e.g., cancer, pulmonary etc
• Experience of leading the development of exercise programmes tailored to individual patient needs.
• Experience of leading clinical assessments, problem identification and treatment
• Experience of leading group exercise sessions
• Experience of supervising, managing and developing more junior staff through appraisal
• Involvement in Service Development
• Involvement in Research
• Involvement in Audit
• Specialist knowledge of working with people who have experienced a stroke.
• Supervision & support of students.
• Experience in delivering community-based rehabilitation
• Experience in delivering stroke rehabilitation

• Excellent organisational and time management skills to manage a demanding workload and priorities effectively, for yourself and supervised staff

• Experience of leading training and the ability to pass on knowledge in a formal and informal setting.
• Demonstrates an understanding of current National policies & priorities in Cancer Care services within the NHS
• Demonstrates knowledge of stroke pathways within the NHS
• Knowledge of the evidence base and guidance relative to the clinical area

Other

• Due to the potential requirement to work across sites and transport non-portable equipment, the postholder is required to be a car driver with a valid UK driving licence
