We are currently looking to recruit a full-time substantive Consultant in Gastroenterology based predominantly at the Northern General Hospital. This post presents an exceptional opportunity to join the multi-award Sheffield Teaching Hospitals GI Directorate.

The appointee must be a member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) or equivalent and is expected to have completed higher specialist training or equivalent in Gastroenterology. It is desirable that the appointee holds or is expected to complete a higher medical degree (i.e. MD or PhD).

Applicants must be on the Specialist Register (for Gastroenterology) or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will, together with Consultant colleagues, be responsible for providing Gastroenterology/Hepatology Services to enable the Sheffield Teaching Hospital to fulfil its service agreements to the Sheffield CCG and other Commissioners.

They will be expected to take part, on a rotational basis, with colleagues with an ‘on ward’ / ‘off ward’ rotation to deliver front door and base ward Gastroenterology/Hepatology care.

It is anticipated that the post holder will have a subspecialty interest that will be encouraged to develop further to complement the department. A subspecialty interest in Nutrition is strongly encouraged.

The appointee will provide advice to Consultant colleagues on medical issues relating to Gastroenterology/Hepatology.

Clinical research will be strongly encouraged and suitable opportunities exist for an active research programme.

The appointee will be expected to take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate training and, in this respect, as long as they remain a Consultant within the Trust will be regarded as an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in the University of Sheffield, subject to the regulations of the University.

The Gastroenterology and Hepatology Directorate is led by Dr Barbara Hoeroldt (Clinical Director) and has extensive facilities for outpatient, inpatient and endoscopic activity on both RHH and NGH sites. It is one of the largest in the UK with 23 Luminal Gastroenterologists and 7 Hepatologists.

Essential

  • Full and Specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • Name on the specialist register for relevant specialty or eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview. If an applicant is UK trained, they must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.

  • Ability to work as an independent practitioner in Gastroenterology.
  • Endoscopic experience for 5 years with appropriate JAG accreditation
