At Sheffield Forgemasters we have an exciting opportunity for a Pyrometry Engineer to join our team. This role is based at our 64-acre site, sitting in the heart of Sheffield, and will be working across several site departments. As a Pyrometry Engineer, you will ensure mandatory AMS2750 compliance across the site, manage the thermocouple laboratory and equipment calibration, and drive heat treatment optimisation to improve furnace efficiency and product quality.
What you’ll be doing:
- Lead implementation and compliance with AMS2750 and pyrometry standards.
- Manage onsite Thermocouple Lab, technicians, and thermocouple manufacturing, procurement, and inventory.
- Ensure correct selection, calibration, and compliance of all thermocouples across site.
- Plan, perform, and oversee Temperature Uniformity Surveys (TUS) and System Accuracy Tests (SAT).
- Oversee temperature instrument calibration per AMS2750 and site QMS; review and approve calibration, TUS, and SAT certifications.
- Develop and maintain quality and manufacturing documentation to internal and customer requirements.
- Troubleshoot furnace compliance issues and support production teams with technical guidance.
- Investigate and resolve quality issues through NCRs and quality clinics.
- Assist with customer & internal audits.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives in pyrometry and heat treatment.
- Work with Maintenance, Technical, Quality, E&T to ensure optimal thermal processing parameters for quality and efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant safety, environmental, and quality regulations.
About You:
- Experience interpreting thermal processing standards, including AMS2750.
- Strong knowledge of metallurgy and heat treatment effects on material properties.
- In-depth understanding of temperature measurement, thermocouples, calibration, and control systems.
- Hands-on experience setting up temperature monitoring and data acquisition systems.
- Strong communicator, able to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders and produce clear procedures.
- Proven problem-solving skills, including risk assessment and root cause analysis.
- Strategic mindset aligned with business and operational objectives.
- Strong quality focus with adherence to standards, procedures, and regulations.
- Comfortable working safely in a heavy engineering environment.

The Working Pattern:
This is a full-time role working 37.5 hours per week, Monday – Friday. We offer flexibility in our start and finish times between 06:15 - 09:30 and 14:30 – 18:00.
