Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is inviting applications for the post of Consultant in Clinical Genetics, hosted by Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust (SC(NHS)FT), based at the Northern General Hospital. This is a full-time post offering a total of 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), which includes 8.5 Clinical PAs and 1.5 Supporting PAs.

The successful candidate will provide clinical support to the current team of six Consultants, delivering Clinical Genetic services for a population of around two million. The role includes opportunities to sub-specialise in the future.

Main duties of the job:

  • Contribute to providing clinical services for the population of South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire.
  • Initially undertake a general caseload, with encouragement and support for the development of special interests and services.
  • Undertake an average of 2-3 clinics per week, seeing approximately 4-5 families per clinic.
  • Participate in a rota for Ward Referrals and urgent cases, with no on-call commitment.
  • Contribute to meetings with mainstream colleagues.
  • Job planning will take place annually.
  • Working hours are flexible, with lunch and travel to peripheral clinics included in the working times.
  • Consideration of time off in lieu for any weekend working.

Person Specification:

  • Qualifications: GMC Registration, MBBS or equivalent plus one of MRCP/MRCPCH or equivalent, Relevant higher degree – MD or PhD.
  • Training: Recognised higher specialised training programme in Clinical Genetics or within 6 months of attaining CCT.
  • Clinical Experience: Wide experience in Clinical Genetics.
  • Audit/Research: Competence in clinical audit, Training in audit at SpR or equivalent level, Interest in research, Able to initiate and carry out medical research projects, Authorship of research papers.
  • Teaching: Experience in training undergraduates and medical students and postgraduate doctors and scientists, Interest in teaching, Specific training in education and/or appraisals.
  • Management: Knowledge of clinical governance, Experience of management, Specific management training.
  • Other Qualities: Ability to work as a team with professional colleagues from medical and other disciplines, Good organisational skills.

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offences Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and will require a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.

Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 a year, Dependant on Experience.
