The R&D Chemist will manage and execute complex resin‐focused projects, drawing on prior industry experience to independently plan experimental programmes, analyse results, and make data‐driven recommendations. They will collaborate closely with experienced R&D Engineers and Project Managers while supporting production, quality, and commercial teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to and drive formulation, optimisation, and validation of epoxy‐based thermoset resin systems for prepregs and film adhesives.
  • Apply industrial experience in coatings, adhesives, composites, or thermosets to improve product robustness and processing performance.
  • Carry out project work from concept through to completion, following structured R&D methodologies.
  • Conduct laboratory studies including kinetic analysis, curing mechanisms, additive optimisation, and structure–property assessments.
  • Provide technical troubleshooting on resin performance, processing issues, and customer‐specific requirements.
  • Maintain awareness of new developments in polymer science, organic chemistry, and thermoset technologies relevant to SHD products.
  • Ensure all technical documentation — including formulations, processing guides, and test reports — is accurate, up to date, and aligned with user feedback.
  • Report experimental methods, findings, and recommendations to direct supervisors in a clear and timely manner.
  • Work closely with R&D Engineers and Project Managers to align formulation approaches with processing requirements and customer needs.
  • Supervise or guide R&D Technicians in laboratory tasks when required.
  • Liaise with Technical, Sales, Planning, and Purchasing departments to support cross‐functional project needs.
  • Work in accordance with SHD Quality and Health & Safety procedures.
  • Undertake any additional duties reasonably requested by the company.

Skills and Ability

  • PhD in Organic Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Materials Chemistry or a closely related discipline.
  • Several years of hands‐on industrial experience in thermosetting resin formulation (epoxy preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of reaction mechanisms, polymerisation chemistry, thermoset curing behaviour, and structure‐property relationships.
  • Experience with analytical and thermal techniques relevant to resins, polymers, and composites (e.g., rheology, DSC, DMA, spectroscopy, chromatography).
  • Ability to design, execute, and interpret complex experiments with a high degree of autonomy.
  • Strong attention to detail and proactive approach to laboratory work and problem‐solving.
  • High degree of computer literacy, including ability to analyse and interpret experimental data.
  • Good planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong communication skills for collaborating with cross‐functional internal teams (production, quality, commercial), and for interacting with suppliers and customers.
  • Ability to perform under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
  • Passion for materials science and enthusiasm for the development of cutting‐edge thermoset resin systems.
