The Role

Shaw healthcare is a care provider operating circa 65 care homes and supported living services across the UK and is the largest employee owned healthcare company in the UK.

Objectives

  • To utilise authentic leadership, role modelling and inspirational skills to motivate the team to deliver excellent quality of care.
  • To manage the effective use of resources, including the financial performance of the Service, and maintain high levels of occupancy.
  • To provide improvement, independence and choice for Service Users.
  • To comply with all regulatory and legislative requirements at all times.
  • To promote the Equality and Diversity of Service Users living and staff working in the environment.
  • To lead the service through the agreed change agenda and build the reputation of the Service.

Principal duties

  • To understand the legal requirements of the prevailing care and other relevant legislation and ensure the Service complies.
  • To personally have a full understanding and working knowledge of all Shaw healthcare policies and procedures and ensure that all these policies are applied at all times.
  • To manage effectively the Service’s budgets and deliver the Key Performance Indicators set for the Service.
  • To ensure that the rota complies with the staffing ratio and meets the needs of the Service Users.
  • To ensure that the Service complies with all statutory obligations and relevant legislation (e.g. environmental health, health and safety).
  • To enable Service Users to control their own financial affairs, where possible, and finances monitored with up to date accurate records kept of all transactions.
  • To ensure the security and confidentiality of records and information relating to the Service.
  • To ensure that all paperwork used is approved by Shaw healthcare and not adapted/varied without following correct protocols.

Practice Expectations

  • To maintain own professional competence and ensure other team members do so.
  • To ensure that all Service Users have an up-to-date care plan which is reviewed regularly and which actively adopts the full range of Person Centred planning and writing.
  • To regularly monitor the quality of care delivery, ensuring that the physical, social, psychological and emotional needs of Service Users are recognised, assessed and met.
  • To ensure that there is a regular programme of activities, which are arranged in line with the Service Users’ needs, wishes and preferences.
  • To ensure Service Users receive a pleasant nutritional diet and are enabled to engage in a positive mealtime experience.
  • To arrange regular reviews with Service Users, social workers, relatives and key workers.
  • To facilitate a pre-admission assessment for all potential admissions.
  • To implement arrangements for responding to safeguarding issues, including taking responsibility for timely and accurate investigation, as well as robust and effective recording and reporting processes.
  • To meet professional and legal responsibilities with regard to the storage, handling and administration of drugs and ensuring the competence of any employees administering medication.
  • To respond immediately to reported concerns or those who may be 'blowing the whistle'.
  • To manage agency use, develop strategies to reduce and execute successfully.
  • To maximise income by selling market beds; achieving a minimum of 95% occupancy of market beds.
  • To deliver obligations on local contracts to a high standard.
  • To monitor and report on all safeguarding issues; ensuring that they are processed accurately and quickly and that lessons are learnt and communicated.
  • To ensure transparency of practice via regular reporting to Senior Management team within Shaw healthcare.
  • To ensure consistent and expected quality of care plans are in place for all Service Users; reviewed appropriately and audited as per schedule.

Essential Criteria

  • Relevant Care and/or Nursing and Management qualification (e.g. NVQ/QCF in Management; NVQ 4 in Care; Registered Manager’s Award; QCF Level 5 in Leadership for Health and Social Care).
  • Management experience gained in relevant health/social care setting.
  • Experience of managing and organising resources, including budgetary control and effective people management.
  • Ability to engage well with residents, relatives, colleagues and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to work flexibly, on occasion, to ensure 24/7 cover throughout the year.
  • Ability to answer out of hours problems in a genuine emergency.
  • Valid driving license and use of own car for work purposes.
