Job Purpose

We are looking for a Senior Platform Engineer with strong experience in database technologies to join our Data Engineering function. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and maintaining automation, tooling, and infrastructure that supports our database platforms. This role sits at the intersection of traditional database administration and modern DevOps practices. You will design and implement CI/CD pipelines, automate operational processes, and embed observability and resilience into our systems. Working closely with the Database and Platform Engineering teams, you will ensure that our database environments are reliable, secure, compliant, and highly available.

Job Duties

  • Design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines for MariaDB, MongoDB, AWS RDS, and EC2 database instances.
  • Automate operational tasks such as backups, restores, patching, scaling, and monitoring.
  • Develop infrastructure-as-code (IaC) and configuration management solutions to standardize deployment of database platforms and code.
  • Collaborate with DBAs, developers, and architects and platform engineering to define and implement robust, repeatable deployment practices.
  • Monitor and optimise database performance, availability, and security using automation and observability tools.
  • Evaluate, adopt, and integrate emerging DevOps and database technologies to enhance platform reliability and efficiency.
  • Drive continuous improvement across deployment workflows, monitoring, and operational efficiency.
  • Ensure all database environments comply with organisational and industry security and data protection standards.
  • Mentor other engineers, share knowledge, and promote DevOps best practices within the Database Engineering function.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Strong Linux administration background and advanced scripting skills (Bash, Shell, or Python).
  • Experience designing and managing CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation.
  • Hands-on experience with automation tools such as Ansible, Terraform, or equivalent.
  • Thorough knowledge of replication, data protection, high availability, and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Familiarity with monitoring and alerting systems such as Prometheus, Grafana, or similar.
  • Understanding of data security, governance, and compliance best practices.

Desirable

  • Experience with database technologies in high-volume, high-availability environments.
  • Experience with Liquibase or similar schema migration tools.
  • Experience with Jenkins pipelines and Groovy scripting.
  • Experience with blue/green or zero-downtime deployment strategies.
  • Understanding of containerisation and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a proactive approach to automation.
  • Previous experience mentoring or guiding colleagues in best practices in coding and automation.
