Key Responsibilities
Fiber Installation & Maintenance
- Install, repair, and maintain fiber-optic cables, including aerial, underground, and inside-plant cabling.
- Perform fiber splicing (fusion/mechanical) and termination using appropriate tools and techniques.
- Conduct OTDR, power meter, and light source testing to ensure signal integrity and compliance with specifications.
- Inspect and maintain fiber enclosures, cabinets, racks, and related infrastructure.
Troubleshooting & Diagnostics
- Diagnose and resolve fiber faults, breaks, and performance issues.
- Interpret test results from OTDR, OLS/OPM, and other fiber testing equipment.
- Respond to outages, service calls, and emergency repairs as required.
Documentation & Reporting
- Accurately document splicing records, test results, as-built diagrams, and network changes.
- Update work orders, field notes, and reports using internal systems or ticketing platforms.
- Maintain inventory of tools, materials, and equipment.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow safety standards, local codes, and industry best practices during all field work.
- Ensure proper use of PPE, fall protection, and other safety equipment.
- Conduct site assessments and adhere to construction and right-of-way regulations.
Customer Service
- Communicate effectively with customers, contractors, and team members.
- Provide clear updates and ensure a positive customer experience during installations and repairs.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 1โ3 years of experience in fiber installation, splicing, or telecommunications field work.
- Hands-on experience with fiber tools: fusion splicer, OTDR, power meter, cleaver, etc.
- Understanding of fiber types, color codes, connectors, and network design basics.
- Ability to work outdoors, climb poles/ladders, and lift 50+ lbs.
Preferred
- Certifications: FOA CFOT, ETA, BICSI, or equivalent fiber-optic certifications.
- Experience with aerial construction, underground boring, conduit installation, or ISP cabling.
- Knowledge of GPON, FTTH, and backbone fiber networks.
