Joining our Data and Systems Team within Children’s Services as a Data Engineer, you’ll be a subject matter expert and principal contact for technical solution development, helping to shape the future of our data capabilities. In this pivotal and demanding role, you’ll combine your technical expertise with innovation to improve processes, develop Office 365 (O365) solutions, and build low-code applications that drive smarter, data‑led decision making. Working closely with colleagues across Children’s Services and the wider Council, you’ll play a leading role in designing, developing, and maintaining systems that transform raw data into meaningful insights. Reporting to the Head of Data and Systems, you’ll lead technical solution development across the team while ensuring continuity of critical operational systems.
What you’ll do:
- Build and maintain data systems, pipelines and architectures to support data extraction, transformation and analysis.
- Ensure continuity, performance and optimisation of key operational databases and business applications.
- Analyse complex datasets to identify trends, improve data quality, and support data‑driven decision making.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements and deliver effective, scalable technical solutions.
- Drive process improvement and innovation through the adoption of new technologies, including Microsoft Azure.
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring and clear communication to bridge technical and non‑technical audiences.
What we’re looking for:
- Proven experience as a Data Engineer or in a similar technical role.
- Experience working with Azure technologies such as Data Lake and Data Factory.
- Proficiency in programming and data tools (e.g. SQL Server, Python, R, HTML, Java).
- Solid understanding of data modelling, system design, and integration techniques.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills with the ability to analyse complex data and deliver practical solutions.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with a proactive, innovative approach to driving change.
