Overview
An on‑call firefighter is a paid person employed by the fire and rescue service who is on call to respond to a range of emergencies and to engage with their community. They have everyday lives and jobs until the pager sounds, then they become professional firefighters. Though the work may be called part‑time, on‑call firefighters are trained and experienced front‑line personnel who save lives and protect people and community assets.
Responsibilities
- Respond to a variety of emergency incidents, including fires, flooding, co‑respondence, road accidents, chemical spills and animal retrievals.
- Attend community events to promote fire safety and build relationships with local residents.
- Work closely with other team members during emergencies, enhancing teamwork and effectiveness.
Qualifications
- Enthusiastic and willing to commit time to the fire and rescue service.
- Must be able to reach the fire station quickly and safely after being alerted.
- Physical fitness is essential; the role can be physically demanding.
- No previous firefighting experience is required; a comprehensive training programme will be provided.
