Job Details:
- Salary Range: £1,413 – £5,652 per annum, plus additional incident call out payments
- Work Location: Winchester Fire Station
- Hours per week: Minimum of 31 on-call hours per week
- Contract Type: Permanent
The Role:
An on-call firefighter is a paid person employed by the fire and rescue service who is ‘on call’ to respond to emergencies and engage with their community. They maintain everyday lives and jobs until their pager sounds, then they become professional firefighters.
The role may be considered ‘part-time’, but on-call firefighters are trained and experienced professionals on the front line, saving lives and protecting communities. They receive thorough training and develop skills related to emergency situations and personal development.
On-call firefighters come from all community backgrounds, including full-time or part-time employment, self-employment, studying, or unemployment. They are dedicated individuals who volunteer their time to support the fire and rescue service and community safety.
This is a demanding role but offers the opportunity to make a significant contribution. Teamwork and community engagement are key components of the role, including attending community events.
Responsibilities include fighting fires, community fire safety, flooding response, co-responding, road accidents, chemical spills, and animal rescue from difficult situations.
Previous Experience:
No prior experience is necessary as comprehensive training is provided. The essential qualities include enthusiasm and the ability to meet specific requirements, notably being able to reach the fire station quickly and safely after alert. Physical fitness is crucial due to the physical demands of the role.
Eligibility:
You must work and/or live within 4 minutes of the Fire Station; applications outside this area will be automatically rejected.
