The Role
An on-call firefighter is a paid person employed by the fire and rescue service who is on call to respond to emergencies and engage with the community. They may have everyday lives and jobs, until their pager sounds, then they become professional firefighters. On-call firefighters are trained and experienced frontline personnel who save lives and protect people and community assets. They are paid for their services, receive thorough training, and learn emergency response skills as well as personal development. On-call firefighters come from all areas of the community and may be at home, employed full- or part-time, self-employed, studying, or not currently employed. They contribute to the fire and rescue service and help protect their communities. The role is demanding, but offers the opportunity to make a real contribution. You will work closely with the team, and may also participate in community events. On-call firefighters handle a variety of situations including community fire safety, flooding, co-responding, road accidents, chemical spills, and animal rescues.
Previous Experience
You do not need prior firefighting experience as a comprehensive training programme is provided. What matters is enthusiasm and the ability to meet essential requirements, including the ability to reach the fire station quickly and safely after being alerted. Physical fitness is important for this role.
