We are looking for a hands-on Workshop Foreman to take ownership of our busy Materials Testing workshop in Consett. This role combines workshop supervision, people management, health and safety responsibility, and practical machining activities. You will play a key role in ensuring the efficient operation of the workshop while supporting, developing and leading the team to deliver exceptional service to our clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operation of the Consett workshop, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently and to the required standards.
  • Lead, mentor and support workshop personnel, ensuring effective utilisation of resources and continuous development of team members.
  • Take responsibility for health and safety compliance across the Consett site, working in line with company policies and procedures.
  • Carry out a variety of hands-on workshop activities including machining, milling, turning, grinding, linishing and processing test samples.
  • Coordinate workshop activities including booking work into the MRF system, housekeeping, maintenance tasks and supporting operational requirements as needed.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this role is someone who has experience in a workshop, manufacturing, engineering or materials testing environment and is comfortable leading a small team while remaining actively involved in day-to-day workshop activities. You will also have the following:

  • Previous experience in a workshop supervisory, team leader or foreman position.
  • Strong hands-on machining and engineering knowledge, including experience with workshop equipment and processes.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to take ownership and make informed decisions.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications and written work instructions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate, mentor and develop others.

Desirable

  • Experience within a materials testing environment.
  • Good understanding of workshop planning and operational processes.
  • A creative and proactive approach to continuous improvement.
  • Computer literacy and experience using workshop management systems.
