What does the role include?

School governors offer key strategic guidance, rather than getting involved in the operational aspects of a school. This involves working with other board members to plan the school’s strategic direction, overseeing the school’s financial performance to ensure money is well-spent, and holding the headteacher or school leadership to account. As a school governor, you’ll work closely with the school’s leadership team, providing challenge and support to help drive improvement. The role typically involves attending around six meetings per year. While it requires commitment and a proactive mindset, it also offers valuable personal and professional rewards – including opportunities for career development and the chance to make a lasting difference in young people’s lives.

What are the benefits?

Serving as a school governor is a highly rewarding experience, offering numerous personal and professional benefits. These include:

  • The chance to experience board-level leadership at any point in your career, to support your progression;
  • The opportunity to develop and improve your technical and interpersonal skills;
  • Building professional networks with people who work within the same and different industries as yourself;
  • Using your lived experience and skills to bring a fresh perspective;
  • Ensuring voices from different groups and communities are represented – including voices from groups that may often struggle to be heard within education.
