The Role
Do you enjoy working with data, understanding how businesses operate and turning analysis into real-world insight?
At SGN, we're looking for a curious and analytical individual to join our Regulation team as a Regulatory Economics Analyst.
This is an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of SGN's regulatory strategy, helping us understand how our performance compares with other energy networks and what drives efficiency across the business. You'll challenge assumptions and help build the evidence base for future regulatory discussions and decisions.
You’ll analyse operational, financial and regulatory data, investigate trends and relationships, and help translate complex analysis into meaningful business insight. Working closely with colleagues across SGN, you'll learn how regulation, economics, operational delivery and data all come together to influence business outcomes.
The role offers the opportunity to develop specialist skills in regulatory economics, benchmarking and statistical analysis, alongside a broad understanding of how a major infrastructure business operates. You'll be supported throughout your career to build new technical skills, including advanced analytical and modelling techniques where appropriate.
You’ll join a small, supportive team working collaboratively on high-profile regulatory and strategic issues. Whether you bring experience from a related discipline or are looking to build a career in regulatory economics, you'll be supported to develop new skills, work with senior stakeholders and take on increasing responsibility over time.
Few analytical roles combine economics, data analysis, business understanding and strategic decision-making in this way. You'll work on issues that help shape how SGN is assessed, funded and regulated, while strengthening the evidence for future regulatory discussions and decisions.
What You'll Be Doing
- Working with a wide range of internal and external datasets to understand the factors that influence business costs and performance.
- Supporting benchmarking and performance analysis that helps SGN understand how it compares with other gas networks.
- Investigating trends, patterns and relationships within data and presenting findings in a clear and accessible way.
- Working with, maintaining and developing analytical tools and models used to inform regulatory decision making, including hands-on use of the benchmarking models used by Ofgem to assess gas network performance and efficiency.
- Working closely with subject matter experts across the business to understand operational activities and interpret analytical results.
- Assisting with research into emerging regulatory, economic and industry issues.
- Supporting the development of evidence and analysis for future price control reviews and regulatory submissions.
What We're Looking For
- While the role involves statistical analysis, we're more interested in curiosity, analytical thinking and problem solving than deep knowledge of any specific statistical technique.
- The successful candidate will enjoy investigating questions, exploring data and joining the dots between different sources of information. They will be comfortable working with numbers but equally interested in understanding the real-world business context behind them.
- You might be a graduate or early-career professional from a background such as economics, mathematics, statistics, business analytics, finance, engineering or another quantitative discipline.
- We'd love to hear from you if you have:
- Strong numerical and analytical skills.
- Experience working with data in Excel or other analytical tools.
- An interest in understanding how businesses operate and what drives performance.
- The ability to investigate problems, identify patterns and draw logical conclusions from evidence.
- Good communication skills and an ability to explain findings to non-technical audiences.
- A willingness to learn new analytical techniques and approaches.
- A collaborative approach and an interest in working with colleagues from a wide variety of backgrounds and disciplines.
- While not essential, an interest in economics, benchmarking, business performance, statistics or modelling would be valuable, together with a desire to continue developing your knowledge in these areas.
- Experience of analytical tools such as Power BI, R or Stata would also be a bonus, but isn't essential. If you've got the curiosity, problem-solving ability and enthusiasm to learn, we'll help you develop the technical skills needed for the role.
Not sure you meet every requirement?
Research shows some people – particularly women and those from underrepresented backgrounds – may hesitate to apply unless they meet every criteria. At SGN, we value diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives.
If this role interests you but you’re not sure you tick every box, we’d still love to hear from you. You might be just who we’re looking for – now or in the future.
