SGN, the team responsible for operating and maintaining GNI (UK) Ltd.’s natural gas infrastructure in the Dumfries and Galloway area of Scotland, is looking for an Operations Engineer for Compressor Stations. In addition to the core operations and maintenance workload, SGN is also responsible for carrying out supplementary capital project delivery work on behalf of the client. The client’s assets include gas compressor stations, offtakes, high‑pressure gas pipelines, and associated block valve stations, which transport gas from the Southwest region of Scotland to the Republic of Ireland via subsea interconnector pipelines.

With your relevant experience and exceptional leadership capabilities, there is a high possibility for you to secure a salary above the starting range. For candidates who are at the higher end of the salary scale, we expect prior managerial experience and the ability to lead SGN staff and contractor resources with complete autonomy.

What will you be doing day to day?

  • Assist the Operations and Maintenance Managers in fulfilling contract obligations safely and efficiently through planned and unplanned maintenance activities.
  • Lead operational resources to provide 24/7/365 emergency response services for the client’s gas infrastructure in Dumfries and Galloway.
  • Manage routine, non‑routine, project and plant & asset outage‑related work covering all 3 main disciplines – mechanical, electrical and instrumentation/control – in accordance with safe control of operations and related procedures, driving a culture of safe working.
  • Undertake incident investigations and safety/technical inspections, and ensure compliance with strict health, safety, environment and quality processes and procedures.
  • Ensure accurate forecasting and planning of network resources for productivity.
  • Contribute to relevant safety studies (HAZIDS, HAZOPS, HAZCONS).
  • Cover operational standby duties as needed for first response or managerial standby as required.

What You’ll Need

  • Knowledge and operational experience of working in the gas, construction, power or petrochemical industries.
  • Strong communication, leadership and influencing skills with an ability to lead both internal teams and external contractors, and capable of deputizing for the contract Operations or Maintenance Manager as required.
  • Detailed understanding of the appropriate legislative requirements, company standards and instructions, including gas industry‑specific regulations.
  • Understanding of the gas transmission system and the linked dependencies of the systems.
  • Comprehensive technical understanding of complex assets and process operations associated with compressor stations and gas pipelines.
  • Ability to liaise and communicate effectively with external enforcement agencies including the HSE and SEPA.
  • High level of IT literacy and associated skills.
  • Commercial acumen and a recognised engineering qualification.
  • Ability to contribute to SGN’s operational responsibilities (including operational standby).
  • Valid driving licence.
