We are looking for a Head of Stakeholder Engagement to lead and deliver SGN’s stakeholder engagement strategy across its operational regions, building effective external relationships, community trust, and stakeholder insight to support the company’s strategic priorities, operational delivery, regulatory commitments, and long-term social licence to operate.

The role will provide strategic leadership on stakeholder engagement across local, regional and national audiences, helping SGN anticipate and respond to reputational and community issues associated with operating critical energy infrastructure during the transition to net zero.

We are looking for two positions, one based in Scotland and one based in Southern England. Travel across each region is expected within these roles.

We deliver safety, warmth, and comfort to homes and businesses. Every role, whether in the office or on the front line, plays a key part in this mission. Here’s how you will contribute…

  • Develop and deliver SGN’s regional stakeholder engagement strategy, ensuring engagement activity supports strategic organisational priorities, operational delivery and long-term business goals in the communities we serve.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including local authorities, elected representatives, community organisations, consumer groups, industry bodies and resilience partners.
  • Champion a proactive and collaborative approach to engagement, helping colleagues across the organisation build meaningful partnerships and strengthen stakeholder relationships.
  • Increase awareness, understanding and trust in SGN, ensuring stakeholders are informed, engaged and able to contribute to discussions that affect their communities and interests.
  • Provide insight and advice on stakeholder priorities, opportunities and emerging issues, helping to shape business decisions and support positive outcomes for customers and communities.
  • Strengthen SGN’s reputation and influence through inclusive engagement, ensuring diverse perspectives are considered and reflected in decision-making and investment programmes.

What you will need

  • Significant experience in stakeholder engagement, external affairs, public affairs or corporate affairs, ideally within local government infrastructure, utilities, energy, transport or other complex operating environments.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain trusted relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, influencing positive outcomes through collaboration, communication and partnership working.
  • Strong understanding of regional and local political, regulatory, community and stakeholder landscapes, with the ability to identify opportunities, navigate challenges and support organisational priorities.
  • Experience managing complex stakeholder issues and reputational risks, using sound judgement and effective engagement strategies to achieve successful outcomes.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, with the ability to develop, motivate and support high-performing teams, fostering an inclusive and collaborative culture.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills, able to present complex information clearly, provide strategic advice and engage effectively with senior leaders and external stakeholders
  • Strong project management and organisational capabilities, with experience managing multiple priorities, measuring impact and delivering results within a complex, matrixed or multi-stakeholder environment

Not sure you meet every requirement?

Research shows some people – particularly women and those from underrepresented backgrounds – may hesitate to apply unless they meet every criteria. At SGN, we value diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives.

If this role interests you but you’re not sure you tick every box, we’d still love to hear from you. You might be just who we’re looking for – now or in the future.
