The overall purpose of this role is to provide strong leadership to the Claims Handling team, ensuring smooth departmental operations. Responsibilities include managing public liability and recovery of motor and non-motor damage claims, with a primary focus on resolving claims against SGN for injury and property damage. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality claims support services to our internal stakeholders and/or external clients and ensuring analysis of claims is completed in a timely and accurate manner.

Here’s how you will contribute…

  • Train, motivate, and evaluate Claims Handling team members.
  • Oversee routine department activities to ensure accurate and timely completion.
  • Maintain accurate and complete claims handling records.
  • Support the preparation of insurance claims reports and determine claims settlement values.
  • Compile, analyse, and report claims handling information to management and the business.
  • Set and facilitate the achievement of department objectives.
  • Authorise and approve claims in alignment with agreed policies and applicable legal frameworks, specifically the ‘New Roads and Streets Work Act (1991)’ (NSRWA) and ‘Gas Act 1986’.
  • Develop, implement, improve, and enforce budgets, policies, and department controls to increase accuracy and efficiency.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with employees, customers, and the wider business.
  • Drive and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

What you will need:

  • Vast experience in a claims handling role, including MoJ personal injury claims and litigation (defendant & claimant).
  • Strong understanding of insurance principles, products, and processes.
  • Excellent data entry, attention to detail, and accuracy skills.
  • Strong grasp of legal procedures and terminology for English & Scottish claims.
  • Attention to detail and a ‘Data-Driven’ Mindset, experience with insight focussed decision making.
  • Proven track record of technical excellence in Claims Handling.
  • Experience in People Management, with strong “people orientation”.
  • Experience in Communication and Influencing, with an ability to partner and influence, challenge and negotiate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Educated to degree or hold a relevant insurance qualification (ACII).
  • Proficiency in insurance-related software and systems (e.g., policy administration systems, claims management systems).
