Fulltime (40 hours), location York, England. We are looking for a technically astute and ambitious Design Engineer with a passion for innovation, environmental technology, and elite sports infrastructure.
At SGL, we do not just grow grass; we help grounds teams create the perfect pitch for the world’s biggest sports stadiums. Since developing our revolutionary turf optimisation system in 2002, we have become the market leader in sports turf technology, supporting grounds teams in over 600 stadiums worldwide. Our technology helps the teams responsible for the quality of the playing surface grow and maintain world-class turf through innovations such as high-tech grow lighting systems, smart data monitoring tools, and sustainable grass disease management solutions, such as our autonomous UVC robot.
We are looking for a Design Engineer to support our growth. In this role, you will work at the cutting edge of stadium delivery, where innovation drives everything we do. Our Engineered Solutions team develops bespoke environmental technologies to deliver elite natural grass surfaces, ensuring athlete safety and long-term sustainability in any environment.
Key responsibilities:
- Provide design engineering expertise and project support to the Engineered Solutions (ES) team.
- Support the development and integration of SGL technologies into our diverse and complex project portfolio.
- Engage with internal HVAC expertise to understand its technical application into the ES portfolio.
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders in relation to design and implementation of the ES project portfolio.
- Work across professional sports, including American football, tennis, soccer, rugby, baseball, and other natural turf environments.
- Collaborate with architects, engineers, sports clubs, athletic directors, grounds managers, sports performance teams, governance and administrators.
- Partner with ES Team, sales and leadership teams to identify and develop new business.
- Participate in client presentations, project briefings, and strategic planning discussions.
- Help shape ES service offering.
- Serve as a technical voice during the design process, helping convert interest into adoption.
- Represent SGL at industry events, conferences, field days, and trade shows.
- Build relationships with key influencers in turfgrass science, sports performance, and sustainability.
- Contribute to the development of pioneering solutions for SGL and our clients.
Your profile:
- Degree in Design, Engineering or other relevant field.
- At least 2+ years of experience in a relevant field.
- Ambitious and engaging, comfort operating in both technical and commercial environments.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage groundsmen, coaches, executives, and boards.
- Experience working within environmental design, HVAC, horticulture would be an advantage.
- Willingness to travel internationally (focus on ME, USA and Europe).
