How This Role Supports Our Mission
The Technical Author plays a crucial role in helping our customers create and maintain safer buildings by providing technical expertise to both internal and external stakeholders, researching, and writing technical content to continually develop and expand the dynamic SFG20 library of maintenance schedules.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out research to produce high-quality technical maintenance-related content, ensuring all documentation complies with technical, legislative, and statutory requirements.
- Create SFG20 maintenance schedules and revise them regularly to align with changes in the industry, including schedule and task descriptions, maintenance actions, maintenance intervals, and time taken to carry out listed maintenance.
- Conduct thorough reviews and edits of technical documents to ensure clarity, accuracy, and consistency.
- Collaborate with subject matter experts to ensure the accuracy and completeness of technical content.
- Participate in product design reviews and provide feedback from a documentation perspective.
- Provide technical advice to SFG20 colleagues and external parties.
- Organise and manage document repositories to ensure easy access and retrieval of technical information.
- Implement version control and document management best practices.
- Test documentation against practical use cases to ensure usability and effectiveness.
- Implement feedback from stakeholders and users to improve documentation quality continuously.
- Collation and analysis of technical issues, trends, and updates.
- Stay abreast of relevant developments relating to the technical and safety aspects of the building services sector and best practices in technical writing.
Essential Criteria
- Demonstrable experience within the construction industry with significant experience in facilities management activities.
- Strong understanding of engineering principles, maintenance, and legislative requirements for building services.
- Excellent technical writing and communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain complex technical concepts to varying audiences.
- A good understanding of Facilities Management (FM), including the day-to-day complexities and challenges of maintaining and managing assets.
- Familiarity with building handover documentation, such as operation and maintenance manuals, record drawings, manufacturers’ literature, and test and inspection certification.
- Ability to interpret legislation, standards, and best practice guides, as well as experience working with maintenance schedules and CAFM systems (SFG20 would be an advantage).
- The ability to communicate complex technical principles to a varied client base.
- Understanding of user needs and requirements to tailor documentation accordingly.
- Flexible and able to work on numerous documents in an organised and disciplined way.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat, and a high level of computer literacy.
Desirable Criteria
- Industry experience working as an engineer in a relevant discipline such as electrical or mechanical engineering, with design, installation, and verification experience.
- Qualified to degree level or equivalent.
- Qualified as a technical author working in the construction industry or a similar environment, writing and maintaining operation and maintenance documents, specifications, or manufacturer’s literature.
