Senior Data Scientist

Location: UK (remote-first, occasional East Midlands meet-ups)

About the role

We’re looking for a hands‑on Senior Data Scientist to play a key role in building the data and analytics foundations of a growing fintech business.

This is a greenfield opportunity. You’ll help design the analytical data layer, build MI and insight capability, and apply machine learning and AI techniques to real business problems in a regulated environment.

You won’t be joining a large, established data team, instead, you’ll be one of the first senior data hires, working closely with engineering, product and commercial stakeholders to shape how data is used across the business.

This role suits someone who enjoys ownership, ambiguity, and building things from scratch, rather than operating in a heavily structured enterprise setup.

What you’ll be doing

• Building and shaping the analytical database used for reporting, insight and modelling
• Designing and delivering MI / reporting that supports commercial and operational decision‑making
• Developing and maintaining machine learning models (Python‑based)
• Working with structured and unstructured data, including behavioural and transactional datasets
• Applying AI / ML techniques pragmatically to real‑world business use cases
• Collaborating closely with software engineers to productionise data and models
• Communicating insights clearly to non‑technical stakeholders

What we’re looking for

• Practical experience building and deploying machine learning models
• Experience working in greenfield or low‑maturity data environments
• Comfortable designing data models, analytical datasets and metrics
• Able to operate independently in a small team and take ownership
• Exposure to AI / NLP / unstructured data use cases
• Experience in fintech, consumer finance, credit, or regulated industries
• Familiarity with cloud‑based data platforms
• Experience embedding analytics into products or decision‑making processes

What this role is not

• Heads of Data / Principal Data Scientists looking for a strategic leadership role
• Candidates who are no longer hands‑on with Python or modelling
• Pure BI or dashboard‑only profiles
• Academic or research‑focused machine learning specialists

This is a hands‑on individual contributor role with scope to grow as the business scales.
