We are looking for an experienced Manual Machinist / Toolmaker to join a well-established engineering business. This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys precision work, problem-solving, and taking pride in high-quality tooling and components.
You will be responsible for the manufacture, modification, repair, and maintenance of tools, jigs, fixtures, and precision components using manual machine tools.
Responsibilities:- Operating manual lathes, mills, grinders, and drilling machines
- Manufacturing tooling, jigs, fixtures, and bespoke components to tight tolerances
- Reading and interpreting engineering drawings and specifications
- Setting up machines and selecting appropriate tooling and materials
- Carrying out repairs, modifications, and improvements to existing tools
- Using measuring equipment such as micrometers, verniers, and gauges
- Working with a variety of materials including steels, alloys, and plastics
- Maintaining high standards of workmanship, quality, and housekeeping
- Supporting production and engineering teams with tooling solutions
- Proven experience as a Manual Machinist and/or Toolmaker
- Strong background in manual machining (essential)
- Ability to work to tight tolerances
- Confident reading technical drawings
- Time-served apprenticeship or equivalent experience preferred
- Strong attention to detail and pride in quality
- Able to work independently and manage workload effectively
- Experience in toolroom environments
- Surface grinding experience
- Knowledge of heat treatment or tool steels
- Some CNC exposure (advantageous, not required)
