Role Summary: The Production Engineer is responsible for supporting the efficient delivery of engineering work associated with rolling stock, maintenance, and modification activities. The role requires an experienced engineer with a strong understanding of freight wagon and passenger vehicle systems, maintenance practices, and operational requirements who can quickly integrate into the team and contribute immediately to production activities. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring engineering work is delivered safely, efficiently, and in compliance with relevant rail standards while supporting workshop and operational teams.

Person Requirements:

  • Experience working with rolling stock (maintenance, overhaul, or modification).
  • Strong understanding of rail vehicle systems and components (e.g., bogies, braking systems, structures, couplings).
  • Experience supporting engineering production or workshop environments.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple workstreams and priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong communication skills, able to work effectively with operations, procurement and project teams.
  • Experience producing engineering documentation and work instructions.
  • Familiarity with rail industry standards and safety requirements.
  • Ideally a Chartered Engineer (CEng) or actively working towards Chartership with a recognised professional engineering institution.
  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or qualified through experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide engineering support for the maintenance, overhaul, and modification of freight rolling stock, with particular focus on bogie systems and associated components.
  • Produce clear and accurate engineering work instructions, procedures, and technical documentation to support production and maintenance activities.
  • Respond to and resolve technical queries raised by production and workshop staff, providing practical engineering solutions to ensure work can proceed safely and efficiently.
  • Raise, communicate, and actively manage technical queries with customers, ensuring timely resolution and formal closure of actions in line with engineering and project requirements.
  • Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) for engineering tasks, modifications, and maintenance activities.
  • Work closely with production teams to ensure engineering solutions are practical, safe, and aligned with operational requirements.
  • Support fault investigation and root cause analysis of technical issues relating to freight wagons and components.
  • Ensure all engineering activities comply with relevant rail standards, safety requirements, and company engineering procedures.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to enhance reliability, maintainability, and production efficiency.
  • Liaise with suppliers, engineering teams, and customers where required to support engineering delivery.
  • Manage part numbering convention and creation of new part numbers into ERP system.
