Salary: GBP28,000 - GBP32,000 per annum. Sewell Wallis is recruiting an Assistant Accountant for a fast‑paced finance team based in Barnsley. This role offers hands‑on transactional finance experience and long‑term development into month‑end and management accounts.
Responsibilities
- Complete daily bank reconciliations across GBP and USD accounts, including posting monies in and out and investigating discrepancies.
- Reconcile PayPal, Sage Pay and other payment platforms, ensuring all balances are accurate and up to date.
- Process supplier invoices and credit notes, matching invoices to purchase orders and goods received where applicable.
- Obtain and reconcile supplier statements, resolve invoice disputes and liaise with suppliers for queries.
- Review and monitor purchase orders, set up new supplier accounts and manage supplier remittances in line with company procedures.
- Run weekly and monthly supplier payment runs, process urgent payments and support international payment activity.
- Process employee expenses, maintain petty cash records and ensure all expenditure is coded accurately and appropriately authorised.
- Provide support with credit control activities, chase overdue payments and maintain strong customer relationships.
- Reconcile company credit cards, review expenditure and ensure supporting documentation is accurate and complete.
- Support intercompany accounting processes, ensuring balances reconcile correctly and reporting requirements are maintained.
- Work closely with overseas suppliers and support import and logistics‑related finance activities, including reviewing and querying import and duty declarations.
- Assist with month‑end processes such as accruals, prepayments, balance‑sheet reconciliations, fixed assets and support management accounts preparation as experience develops.
Qualifications & Skills
- Previous experience in an Assistant Accountant, Accounts Assistant or similar finance role.
- Strong purchase ledger, reconciliation and transactional finance experience.
- Excellent Excel skills – confident use of SUMIFS, XLOOKUP and/or VLOOKUP.
- Experience reconciling bank accounts and payment platforms.
- Strong attention to detail and problem‑solving ability.
- Confident communicating with suppliers and customers.
- Ability to manage workload effectively in a fast‑paced environment.
- Experience with Sage or similar systems is advantageous.
- Experience with foreign currency or international transactions is beneficial.
- AAT qualification or studying is desirable but not essential.
