We have an exciting new opportunity as a Engineering Design Business Lead. Directing a design function undertaking feasibility, outline and where appropriate, detailed designs for capital solutions that will enable Severn Trent to successfully deliver over £6bn of investments in the next five years. Your team will also be supporting the development of the overall portfolio strategies for future investments plans.
We’re always thinking outside the box and we’re looking for an individual who can innovate, drive continuous improvements in design and the design process, and nurture the team’s development, effectiveness, and efficiency. This role can be based on any of our capital hubs; Shrewsbury, Derby or Coventry.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
Reporting directly into the Head of Design, you’ll have 6-9 direct reports, c.40-70 people directly employed in your team and additional framework services provided by several design houses and consultancies. We are seeking a dedicated individual to develop and nurture a highly engaged, high performing team and to take personal responsibility for ensuring that we and our external business partners deliver innovative, high-quality, efficient designs within our Capital Delivery works programme. The ideal candidate will ensure that these designs:
- Align with our strategic goals to achieve carbon neutrality.
- Enhance natural and social environments.
- Provide great value for money to our customers.
- Meet externally committed programme milestones.
- Fully comply with all relevant company strategies, policies, procedures, and standards.

A senior level role in our organisation, as a Business Lead you will have further leadership responsibilities including:
- Developing and managing a resource-loaded programme to ensure quality, cost, and key milestone targets are met.
- Ensuring your team competently discharges the role of Principal Designer under CDM Regulations.
- Overseeing design work by external consultants and construction partners to meet relevant standards.
- Managing operating costs within authorized budgets.
- Fostering strong industry relationships and researching external best practices.
