EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Our Water Quality and Environment team have an opportunity for you to join as our new Microbiology Team Leader. This role will be based in Church Wilne.

In your new role you’ll be responsible for the leadership and management of a team of expert Laboratory Scientists who undertake the analysis of regulatory drinking water samples and associated samples from water treatment works, service reservoirs, customer taps and catchment surveys which deliver regulatory commitments to the Drinking Water Inspectorate.

You’ll be accountable for ensuring that all samples are analysed, and results reported in compliance with the requirements of the Quality Management System and ISO17025 / DWTS accreditation.

You’ll investigate, solve, and proactively prevent data and quality assurance issues through route cause analysis. You’ll also drive and develop continuous improvement within your team and work with internal and external stakeholders.

Some of your other key accountabilities will include:

  • Direct First Line Management responsibility for a team of expert quality analysts involving complex technical analytical processes & instrumentation.

  • Carrying out effective resource management to deliver requirements of the Annual Sampling Plan, whilst balancing against reactive workloads.

  • Managing internal and external compliance requirements.

  • Validating regulatory results by checking and approving AQC, system suitability and environmental checks before authorisation and release of final results to stakeholders and regulatory bodies.

  • Assessing data for trends to ensure ongoing compliance with regulatory requirements. Ensuring that data issues are resolved in a timely manner for DWI data submission.

  • Lead and ensure team participation in external proficiency testing schemes to assist with UKAS compliance, taking a technical lead in investigating any anomalous results.

  • Liaising directly with Instrument Manufacturers and Service suppliers to agree maintenance, repair and calibration schedule to ISO 17025 guidelines.

  • Acting as an emergency contact for the relevant laboratory teams as part of an out of hours standby rota.

  • Technical Expert responsible for validation and implementation of both new and existing methodology. To be successful, you’ll ideally have worked within an ISO quality system, hold a Chartered status with the relevant professional body and have a minimum of five years’ experience in a regulatory laboratory environment in the Water Industry, similar Utility or Environmental Industries.

You’ll demonstrate strong communication, problem solving and IT skills and have experience supervising or managing and developing a team. You’ll have a comprehensive understanding of the Quality Management System and be able to critically evaluate and draw conclusions from scientific and other data.
