Apprenticeship Programmes are a great way to earn and learn. Our Apprentice Maintenance Technician- Mechanical Programme offers the perfect blend of personal and professional development, exposing you to the core of our business. You’ll gain practical experience in a few teams, developing your knowledge and understanding of Severn Trent and its processes. This will help you communicate data effectively to a wide variety of stakeholders. We welcome apprentices from diverse backgrounds and will support you with varied experiences, training and development to provide a grounding for your future career.

You will be based at Barston in Solihull. Mechanical Maintenance Technicians solve problems and ensure critical equipment and assets (like pumps, motors, gearboxes, valves, actuators and other mechanical components) remain in good working condition, overhauling and repairing when needed to keep our treatment processes operating 24/7. You will undertake installation, testing, monitoring, servicing, removal, replacement, maintenance and repair of a range of mechanical equipment as part of planned preventative, condition-based and reactive maintenance programmes.

In this programme you will have 1-1 meetings with business leads, mentors, a study buddy, the cohort leader and the New Talent Team to discuss development and career ambitions. You will study towards a level 3 qualification in Water industry asset maintenance technician.

What You Will Learn

  • Maintenance practices, processes and procedures covering a range of waste and water treatment systems, plant, and equipment.
  • Theory and principles underpinning the design and function of mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Installation and connection of electro-mechanical equipment and components used in water and wastewater treatment processes.
  • Tasks such as aligning, leveling and setting up equipment; maintaining hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Use of hand and power tools and precision measurement tools (micrometers, verniers, lasers, etc.).
  • Interpreting engineering drawings, schematics and manuals to install or relocate equipment and components.
  • Mentoring: you’ll be buddied with a technical mentor; at the end of the programme you’ll work as part of the site maintenance team with a workload to manage.

About The Programme

Our New Talent Team will guide you and support you every step of the way. Your line manager, mentor and apprentice buddy will help you reach your full potential at Severn Trent.

Location: Barston, Solihull, B92 0HY

Standard: Water industry asset maintenance technician

Apprenticeship Level: 3

Apprenticeship Duration: 48 months

Starting Salary: £22,500

Entry Criteria: This apprenticeship standard is Level 3 (equivalent to 2 A-Levels). If you don’t have GCSEs in English and Maths, you will need to take functional skills as part of the apprenticeship, achieving Level 2 prior to completion.

Driving Requirements: You must have a full UK driving licence and access to your own vehicle upon completion of your apprenticeship. Some sites are remote and not serviced by public transport; please ensure you can arrive on time.

You will work 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with a pattern of 7:00–15:30, 7:00–15:00 or 8:00–16:00.
