Our Apprentice Maintenance Technician- Mechanical Programme offers the perfect blend of personal and professional development, exposing you to the core of our business. You’ll be supported every step of the way. Your role will be to gain practical experience in a few teams developing your knowledge and understanding of Severn Trent and the processes. All of this will allow you to further develop your skills so you can communicate data effectively to a wide variety of stakeholders.

You will be based at Pirehill in Stone, Staffordshire, the heart of our patch. Our Mechanical Maintenance Technicians are exceptional problem solvers. They ensure our critical equipment and assets (like pumps, motors, gearboxes, valves, actuators and other mechanical components) remain in good working condition and quickly overhaul and repair them when needed to keep our treatment processes working effectively, allowing us to provide essential services to our customers around the clock.
You’ll undertake installation, testing, monitoring, servicing, removal, replacement, maintenance, and repair of a range of mechanical equipment, sometimes complex, as part of planned preventive, condition based and reactive maintenance programmes. In this exciting programme, you will have the chance to discuss your development and career ambitions in your 1-1 meetings with business leads, mentors, a study buddy, the cohort leader, and the New Talent Team.
As part of this apprenticeship, you will be studying towards a level 3 qualification in Water industry asset maintenance technician.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
- Maintenance practices, processes and procedures covering a range of waste and water treatment systems, plant, and equipment.
- Relevant level of theory and principles that underpin the design and function of mechanical systems and equipment.
- How to install and connect a range of electro-mechanical equipment and components along with other associated equipment used throughout water and wastewater treatment processes.
- How to perform tasks such as aligning, levelling and setting up equipment and components, as well as maintaining hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Skills in the use of hand and power tools and how to use micrometers, verniers, lasers and other precision measurement tools.
- How to interpret engineering drawings, schematics and manuals to install, position or re-locate mechanical equipment, pipework and other associated components.
Whilst on the apprenticeship programme, you’ll be buddied with a technical mentor whilst you develop your skills and knowledge. At the end of the programme, you’ll be working as part of the site maintenance team and will have your own workload to manage and deliver which may require you to work on your own.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
Our New Talent Team will guide you and support you every step of the way. Furthermore, your line manager, mentor and apprentice buddy will be there to help you in making sure you reach your full potential here at Severn Trent.
Location: Pirehill, Stone, Staffordshire, ST15 0SH
Standard: Water industry asset maintenance technician
Entry Criteria: This apprenticeship standard is at Level 3 (equivalent to 2 A-Level qualifications). If you don’t already have GCSEs in English and Maths, you will need to take functional skills as part of the apprenticeship, which is an alternative to GCSEs and achieve a Level 2. You will need to achieve this prior to completion of your apprenticeship.
Driving Requirements: You must have a full UK driving licence along with access to your own vehicle upon completion of your apprenticeship. Please note, some of our sites are in remote locations and not serviced by public transport. It is your responsibility to ensure you can arrive safely at work for your start time each day, so please consider this before applying.
You will be working 37 hours per week Monday to Friday, across a 7 am – 3:30 pm / 7 am – 3 pm / 8 am – 4 pm working pattern.
