This role can be based at our Lostock, Dalton, or Mansfield sites, depending on your location and preference. At Severfield, we’re creating better ways to build for a world of changing demands. We have a fantastic opportunity for a Design Engineer. Our commercial & industrial division designs, fabricates and constructs structural steelwork for a variety of sectors including commercial offices, stadia & leisure, industrial & distribution, data centres, retail and health and education. The division has manufacturing sites in three locations: Dalton, Lostock, and Enniskillen. Each has full-service capabilities and modern manufacturing processes enabling us to provide a high-quality product to a variety of sectors.
In the Design Engineer role, you will be responsible for delivering structural engineering solutions from tender appraisal through to construction. This includes evaluating site conditions, interpreting architectural requirements, and developing robust designs. You’ll also investigate technical challenges and provide practical, cost-effective solutions that support project success. Collaborate within the engineering team to produce structural solutions and calculations, contributing to both tender and contract stages. Develop professionally through hands-on experience and secondments to departments such as Site, Estimating, and Contract Management. Support design activities—including member and connection design, temporary works, and tender-stage structural input—with guidance from senior engineers. Assist in standardising structural procedures and details, aligning with the company’s manufacturing and erection methods. Engage with internal teams and external stakeholders, including clients, architects, and consultants, to gather information and refine structural schemes. Communicate engineering solutions clearly, using appropriate drafting methods, accurate calculations, and relevant codes of practice. Manage design information flow, ensuring outputs reflect the most current data and project requirements. Mentor Graduate Design Engineers, offering guidance and support to aid their development.
To be successful in this position a degree in Civil/Structural Engineering would be expected and a minimum of 4 years’ post-graduation experience working on the detailed design of structural steelwork projects. Relevant experience in any of the following: detailed connection design, temporary works design or main frame design would be essential.
