Location: Loughborough, Leicestershire

Contract: Initial 6-month contract

Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Working Pattern: Hybrid – 2 days office-based, 3 days working from home

Pay Rates: PAYE: £41.69 per hour or Umbrella: £55.00 per hour

Seven Resourcing is currently recruiting an experienced Senior Ecologist to join a local authority service based in Loughborough. This role offers a hybrid working arrangement and the opportunity to play a key role in conserving and enhancing biodiversity across the borough, with a strong focus on Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and ecological planning.

The Role

The Senior Ecologist will provide specialist ecological advice to planning officers, developers, and stakeholders, ensuring biodiversity is fully integrated into development proposals and that statutory and policy requirements are met. The postholder will also lead on ecological projects, monitoring, and habitat management across the borough.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide professional ecological advice on the integration of biodiversity within development projects
  • Ensure a consistent and effective approach to Biodiversity Net Gain across planning services
  • Advise planning applicants and planning officers within statutory timescales
  • Monitor delivery of Biodiversity Net Gain against approved BNG plans
  • Support planning enforcement investigations and contribute to enforcement cases where required
  • Maintain ecological records and undertake surveys of Local Wildlife Sites (LWS)
  • Monitor and enhance sites of ecological and nature conservation importance
  • Commission and manage contractors to deliver environmental and ecological surveys
  • Prepare and implement habitat creation schemes and management plans
  • Supervise contractors and volunteers as necessary
  • Prepare, present, and contribute to reports for committees and senior stakeholders
  • Liaise with county-level environmental record centres and manage service-level agreements
  • Work collaboratively with internal departments, town and parish councils, and external agencies
  • Support team objectives and contribute to service-wide performance and improvement initiatives
  • Ensure all work is delivered in line with equality, customer service, safeguarding, and information governance standards

Essential Requirements

  • Significant professional experience working as an Ecologist, ideally within a local authority or planning environment
  • Strong knowledge of UK environmental legislation, planning policy, and Biodiversity Net Gain requirements
  • Experience providing ecological advice on planning applications and development proposals
  • Ability to manage contractors, surveys, and habitat management projects
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and collaborative working skills
  • Ability to manage workloads effectively and meet statutory deadlines
